  3. Rankings preview an All Ireland weekend
4th June 2015 by Paul Reynolds

Rankings preview an All Ireland weekend

It was a strangely muted week in Leinster, the NCU and North West last week, as by and large all matches went the way one would expect.

In Leinster, the first round of the Senior Cup went the same way as the sister competitions in the other main unions, with the favourites winning each time. Leinster, Phoenix and Balbriggan all threatened to beat their Division 1 opponents, but when push came to shove, it was the higher placed team who pulled through.

Perhaps the only "upset" was when Pembroke (now in 8th) overcame The Hills (now in 7th), but in reality Pembroke are one of the form teams around at the moment, and much of the smart money was on Pembroke.

It was a similar story in the two Ulster unions, with little in the way of upsets as both leagues had their first full program for many weeks. This all meant that there was little change in the table.

Next week sees the second round of both the Bob Kerr Irish Senior Cup and the National Cup, and this is how the rankings see those ties

Irish Senior Cup (matches most likely to see upsets at the top)

YMCA (3) vs Merrion (5) - The tie of the round. It will be intense cricket, and both sides have an excellent chance. Both have also had a disappointing start to the year. It should be a cracker

Leinster (23) vs Muckamore (21) - Leinster have had a pretty disappointing start to the year, but tend to punch above their weight in this competition. They go into this match as underdogs, but will fancy their chances against the NCU Section 1 side who are unbeaten in the league

North County (13) vs Bready (17) - The Norh West's best chance of having a quarter finalist, but in fairness, that is a very slim chance. County have been a revelation this year, with overseas player Brenton Parchment galvanising the ten other men of Balbothery. Bready are 1-1 in the league as opposed to North County's unbeaten start

Malahide (16) vs The Hills (7) - A tight one in prospect in the Village. The holders, Division 2 side The Hills travel to Malahide of Division 1. The Hills should win, being ranked nine places higher, but Malahide have home advantage.

Lisburn (18) vs Civil Service North (6) - An all NCU Premier League clash. Both have started the season poorly, but the rankings say CSN will sneak it.

Clontarf (1) vs Strabane (14) - The number one side in the land who should advance to the next round. They are unbeaten so far this year, and some would say they have done that despite not playing well. Strabane have a record that is completely the opposite, and are yet to win a match.

Pembroke (8) vs Ardmore (25) - Pembroke have been one of the form teams around this year, and even with the ever green Decker Curry, they should be too hot for the North West side.

Waringstown (4) vs County Galway (unranked) - One of the most controversial cup runs in recent Irish Cup history will probably come to an end today, irrespective of who is playing for Galway. Waringstown are yet to lose a game this year.

National Cup (matches most likely to see upsets at the top)

Ballaghaderreen (unranked) vs Bangor (41) - Ballaghaderreen have been scoring runs galore this year, and it will be an interesting trip from Down to Roscommon. An upset on the cards.

County Kerry (unranked) vs Dundrum (LCU) (unranked) - An intriguing tie. Dundrum have had a poor start to the season, but should have enough firepower. Kerry beat Cork County a fortnight ago, and will be no push overs.

Greystones (unranked) vs Cliftonville (40) - Greystones were impressive in the first round, but Cliftonville are several notches above Sion Mills. There is still a touch of the unknown about Greystones this year though, and they are defintielky capable of advancing.

Laois (unranked) vs Holywood (43) - Laois are top of Division 3, had a good first round win in this competition, and have also won their first round match in the Senior 2 Cup. Holywood should be too good, but Laois have a real chance.

Drummond (38) vs Downpatrick (24) - Drummond are unbeaten in the NW Championship, against Downpatrick who are second in Section 1 in the NCU. A good match up in prospect.

Rush (36) vs Academy (unranked) - A really stange season for Academty so far this season, with some brilliant results interspersed with some poor ones. Rush should be too strong, especially at home.

Derriaghy (37) vs Cork Harlequins (unranked) - It would be churlish to write off Quin's chances, but a four five hour drive is against them, and Derriaghy have started well, beating Phoenix in the first round, and lying in third in NCU Section 1

County Clare vs Newbuildings - Unfortunately, County Clare have folded, giving Newbuildings a bye to the quarter final
