Weekend Report: IBI Corporate Finance LSC

The IBI Corporate Finance sponsored Leinster Senior Cup completed the first two of its Quarter Finals on Sunday with Merrion and Clontarf going through to the semi-finals on 2nd July. They will be joined by the winners of the matches between:

  • The Hills v YMCA
  • Pembroke v Railway Union

with the draw for the next round, carried out on Tuesday, 27th June, broadcast live on Near FM.

The two QF matches involving Clontarf and Phoenix and Merrion and Terenure turned out to be rather one-sided affairs. In both cases winning the toss proved important and once big scores were set on a very hot afternoon the team batting second were on the back foot. In the game at Castle Avenue all six Clontarf batsmen that were called upon contributed a score. Bill Coghlan [73] and John Mooney [60] led the way and the score of 294/4 in the 40 overs was always going to be a challenge. As it turned out the Clontarf attack ensured that no Phoenix batsman got settled and the team was eventually dismissed for a disappointing 140. There were wickets for John Mooney [4/19] and a brace each for David Delany [2/28] and Andrew Poynter [2/13].

In the other QF Merrion compiled an even bigger score. After Michael Lewis [44] had got Merrion off to a quick start a couple of wickets fell but once a partnership between John Anderson [125*] and Vikas Dhiman [52*] established itself a big total was inevitable. The final score of 316/4 was beyond Terenure who were eventually bowled out for 126. The left-arm spin of Tom Stanton [3/29] and Jamie Brown [3/15] did most of the damage after the quick bowlers made the initial breakthrough.

The remaining QFs take place next Sunday [25th June].
