  3. The Competition for Individual Awards
28th August 2016 by Eddie Lewis

The Competition for Individual Awards

Every years awards are given for individual performances in Senior Competitions. The Senior Competitions is something of an anomaly as the term is no longer used to describe the leagues in question. But the awards go back many years and one is loath to mess with history. There are now awards for the first three Divisions.

The Merchant Cup is for the batsman who has the highest average in Senior Cricket [OCD1 and Leinster Senior Cup]. The current threshold for runs is 450. The Cup was first awarded in 1921 by T. F. Marchant in memory of his son killed in action in the First World War. The Marchant Cup is the oldest individual trophy in Leinster Cricket. Previous winners

The O’Grady Cup is for the top of the bowling averages. The O'Grady Cup was first presented in 1937 for the best senior bowler by Mr J E O'Grady a Past President of the LCU and a member of Pembroke.

The Hopkins Cup for wicket keepers was first presented in 1974 by former Merrion and Pembroke wicketkeeper Joe Hopkins in memory of his father, who was also a wicketkeeper. The Samuels Cup for all-rounders was first awarded in 1963, and was presented by Carlisle CC, in recognition one of its greats, Willie Samuels, who played in pre-senior days.

Another Carlisle stalwart gave his name to the trophy for leading catcher in the province. Alf Solomons was a leading figure in Leinster cricket for many years.

The final thresholds for runs and wickets and for qualifications for all-rounder award will be determined by the OCC. Overseas players are not eligible of the individual awards though they may top the averages. For previous winners of awards go to http://www.cricketleinster.ie/archives/players
