Wednesday 25th of May sees a great culmination to the Schools Senior Cup season, with both Boys and Girls finals taking place on the same day!
In Sydney Parade, we have the girls final, which will be between St Andrews College and Mount Sackville School, whilst in Anglesea Road, CUS will face Blackrock College in the boys final.
The girls final is not the first meeting between the sides this season, they faced each other in the group stages with Mount Sackville getting the better of that exchange with tomorrow’s opponents. St Andrews bounced straight back with comprehensive victories against St Columbas and St Josephs to finish 2nd in the group, whilst Mount Sackville went unbeaten against the same oppositions to take top spot. St Andrews saw off Wesley in the semi-final stage to then secure a rematch with Mount Sackville, who defeated Mount Temple in their semi-final.
The boys final is always an excellent showpiece event in the school sports calendar and this year will be no different with full coverage from Anglesea Road as the game unfolds.
CUS boast a side full of strong players with plenty of years of experience in these stages of the competition. Leinster’s Andrew and Mark Tonge are their main men with bat and ball respectively, whilst they also have plenty of representation from Malahide in the form of the Manks brothers, Oliver and Elliott, and the Grant brothers Jack and Mitchell, Clontarf’s Ethan Marshall and Luke Thompson will also be in a side that looks as strong as the school’s cricketing history suggests it ought to be.
They face off against Blackrock College who confirmed their place in the final with a comprehensive win over Templecarrig in the semi-final on Monday afternoon, the Williamstown outfit also have a strong crop of players in their side this season, Pembroke pair Macdara Cosgrave and Patrick Morris, YMCA man Tom Johnson and Railway Union’s Irish U19 Philippe le Roux are four who have all played Senior League Cup cricket so far this season.
The last time this competition was played, in 2019, also saw these two sides meet in the final, from which CUS have seen Neil Rock, Nathan McGuire and David O’Halloran go on to be senior InterPro players, whilst similar can be said of Blackrock who had Gavin Hoey and JJ Garth in their side at the time. That final was won by the Leeson Street school, and they will be hoping for similar success both in this game and future years to come for their class of 2022.
