  3. PEMBROKE CONTINUE 100% RECORD ON NIGHT OF BIG WINS
13th May 2022 by Mick Cotter

PEMBROKE CONTINUE 100% RECORD ON NIGHT OF BIG WINS

A night of generally one-sided cricket this evening saw big wins for Pembroke, YMCA, Clontarf and Merrion in Sprint Coatings Division One, as only one side failed to claim full bonus points in a winning cause.

Starting at Sydney Parade where the featured game of the evening took place, Leinster were shorn of their internationals and as a result, when Mary Waldron won the toss for Pembroke she had no hesitation in electing to bowl first.

Orla Prendergast accounted for Joanna Loughran in her opening spell, with Louise McCarthy dismissing Rebecca Rolfe and Ruby Shirt, as she bowled her four overs through at the start, finishing her spell with figures of 2/9.

After the run out of Jenny Sparrow, Isabel Saeed-Maguire and Katie Dillon rebuilt to ensure Leinster were saved from setting any potentially embarrassing records, batting most of the way through to the 20th over before they were dismissed for 14 and 20 respectively, Orla Prendergast taking the wicket of Dillon to finish with figures of 2/8 from her four overs. Leinster finishing their 20 overs 63/7.

The Pembroke chase was professional, short and sweet as Mary Waldron punished some loose deliveries powerfully to the rope on the leg side, before also showing some nice touch with a pair of late-cuts. Lou Lou Little was dismissed for 14, bringing Isobel Jennings to the crease, however by that stage the damage was done, and it was left to Waldron to strike the final boundary. She finished 39* from just 17 balls in a whirlwind chase lasting just 5.3 overs.

Nearby at Anglesea Road, Merrion made 151/5 in their 20 overs thanks primarily to Rebecca Stokell’s 52, she was supported by Leah Paul making 37, with Rachel Delaney also making 25, Jane Maguire and Robyn Searle the pick of the bowlers for the away side taking 1/17 and 1/13 respectively.

The Hills started reasonably in response, reaching 39/1 however at that stage Searle was dismissed by Julianne Morrissey, and although Maguire took the score to 60/3, when she then fell to Leah Paul it became almost a procession, as the away side were bowled out for 79, meaning a 72 run victory for Merrion. Julianne Morrissey the pick of the bowlers with 3/15, well supported by Síbha Bhoja’s 2/9 and Leah Paul’s 2/11.

In Malahide, YMCA’s victory was all about their bowlers as Georgina Dempsey took the first two wickets to fall, before Alice Tector took a hat-trick accounting for Arlene Kelly, Beth Deacon and Maria Kerrison in back to back deliveries, Dempsey then dismissed Sarah Brophy and Gemma Devally in the last over of the powerplay to have the away side well in the ascendency.

Tector took the further wickets of Isobel McCormack and Katie Brophy, before Vanshika Shukla dismissed Maria O’Halloran to round off the innings, Malahide all out for 55. Tector finishing with 5/7 from 4 overs, with Dempsey taking 4/15.

YMCA’s chase was completed with minimal fuss, having lost Siúin Woods early on, Sarah Forbes got the innings going with 18 before being dismissed, after which, Dempsey and Robyn Lewis saw their side to an 8 wicket victory, making unbeaten scores of 14 and 21 respectively.

In Castle Avenue, Clontarf defeated Phoenix thanks mainly to a destructive 5 wicket haul for Christina Coulter-Reilly. Batting first, the away side reached 25/0 before losing a wicket, firstly it was Freya Sargent who took a brace of wickets, before Coulter-Reilly tore through the Phoenix middle-order to reduce their visitors to 58.

The home side then chased the score for the loss of just one wicket, thankfully for the Tarf faithful avoiding any scares along the way, Coulter-Reilly was again to the fore making an unbeaten 20 in the run chase as she saw her side home in the 8th over.
