Organ donation and transplantation save the lives of between 200 and 250 people in Ireland every year. However, there are currently over 700 people on a waiting list for an organ. By becoming an organ you could save the lives of up to 8 people who are in end-stage organ failure.
The Opt for Life Campaign is an All Ireland campaign that proposes a legislative change to the area of Organ Donation in both the North of Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. The aim of the campaign is to increase organ donation levels in Ireland.
The proposed legislative change would see the government adopt a 'soft opt out' law whereby all citizens would be presumed to consent to the donation of their organs upon their death, unless they opt out and chose not to be an organ donor.
In the meantime, while we wait for legislative change, we would encourage all our supporters and friends to make the greatest possible act of generosity by giving the gift of life. Please consider becoming an organ donor and discuss the matter with your family. To get a donor card please visit www.organdonation.ie .
