  3. LEWIS LEADS YM HOME IN 10 WICKET VICTORY
19th May 2022 by Mick Cotter

LEWIS LEADS YM HOME IN 10 WICKET VICTORY

Gaby Lewis was the main protagonist for YMCA on their return to Claremont Road this evening, as her unbeaten 30-ball 60 saw her side to a ten-wicket victory over The Hills.

Lewis shared an unbroken stand of 101 with Sarah Forbes who made 33* in an excellent stand which saw them chase their target in just 10.5 overs. The pair had scored 52 from the 6 over Power Play in spite of Jane Maguire opening up with a maiden over, however once the 7th over began, Lewis began to open her shoulders and before the end of the 9th over had brought up her half-century, with the winning runs eventually coming in the 11th over from the bat of Sarah Forbes.

Earlier in the day, Jane Maguire had won the toss and chosen to bat first, however things got off to a bad start for the away side, as with the first ball of the second over, Georgina Dempsey induced a nick from the bat of Robyn Searle, where she was pouched at first slip by Gaby Lewis, when Aisling Byrne was run out and Maguire herself then adjudged LBW off the bowling of Sarah Forbes, the away side were 35/3 and in need of some gritty runs.

Thankfully for them, Clíodhna O’Reardon and Rebecca Gough provided just that, scoring 20 and 25* respectively as they moved the score to 100/5 from their 20 overs. Georgina Dempsey the pick of the home side’s bowlers taking 2/21, whilst Sarah Forbes was the other wicket taker, with 1/20 from her spell. There was a run out apiece for Gaby Lewis and Lucy O’Reilly, who’s contribution was a spectacular direct hit from backward point.

Elsewhere, Merrion made 132/6 thanks to 42 from Rebecca Stokell with support from Isabel Light and Leah Paul who both made 17, before restricting Phoenix to 76/6 from their 20 overs. There was a wicket apiece for Julianne Morrissey, Niamh MacNulty, Síbha Bhoja and Celeste Raack, whilst Leah Paul was the pick taking 2/11 from her three over spell.

In Sydney Parade, Pembroke batted first and thanks to half-centuries from international pair Mary Waldron and Shauna Kavanagh, made their way to 157/3 from their 20 overs, the skipper Kavanagh top scoring with 76, whilst Waldron made 64. Arlene Kelly’s spell of 1/15 from 4 overs the stand out effort for the away side. In reply, and excellent 73 from Caoimhe McCann was the backbone of the chase effort, as she shared a partnership of 40 with Amy Hunter (16), then 83 with Anna Kerrison (27) as they made a valiant effort, however finished on 133/3 in their allocated overs to fall to a 24 run defeat.

Finally in Observatory Lane, Clontarf overturned Leinster in the shock result of the evening. Leinster made 105/7 thanks to 50* from Ava Canning, however no other player could manage double figures and the score only really made it above 100 thanks to 26 extras bowled by their visitors. Christina Coulter-Reilly was the pick of the bowlers yet again for Clontarf, this week taking 3/16. The ‘Tarf chase centred around contributions from Coulter-Reilly (23) and Alice Walsh who top scored with 36, as they made their way to their target of 106 in just 12.5 overs, Canning was again the pick of the bowlers taking 2/10 from her 4 overs, whilst Jenny Sparrow also took 2/32 however it was not enough for Leinster who fall behind Clontarf after that defeat.
