IBI CORPORATE FINANCE PREMIER LEAGUE PREVIEW – ROUND 10 (JULY 18TH)

Almost as suddenly as it began, we arrive at the penultimate round of fixtures in the IBI Corporate Finance Premier League, and with two games to go, the outlook for the final stretch of the season is beginning to look quite clear-cut.

North County, Clontarf and Phoenix are all faced with must-win games to keep their hopes of Premier League cricket alive, whilst Merrion and Leinster can confirm their slots in the top tier should they win this weekend, whilst Railway Union need to outscore Clontarf by 4 points to seal their slot in the top 6.

This weekend’s games see league-leaders Pembroke playing host to Clontarf, whilst second placed Balbriggan are also at home, against Railway Union. North County play host to Merrion, as Malahide make the trip to The Mardyke to take on Cork County. In Observatory Lane, Leinster face off against Civil Service, whilst bottom-placed Rush make the trip into the Park to take on Phoenix.

PEMBROKE VS CLONTARF

A huge weekend of cricket lies ahead for Pembroke who can ensure they are top of the table going into the split should they claim a victory in this fixture. That will see them remaining in a strong position on all fronts, having claimed the first silverware of the season last weekend and with an all-Ireland semi-final to come on Sunday. They have had their big names standing up in recent weeks, none moreso than Gavin Hoey in the last two weeks as his maiden Senior century helped them see off The Hills in the Leinster Senior Cup, before his player of the match performance in the Alan Murray Cup Final last weekend. He leads the spin attack alongside Paul Lawson and Harry Tector, who make up one half of a very strong six-man attack in total. The seamers are led by Byron McDonough, who himself starred in last week’s T20 victory, claiming 3/13 in the final, alongside Addison Sherriff and Olly Riley in a unit that thrives off extracting extra bounce. The batting line-up is likely to see Tim Tector and JJ Garth continue their partnership at the top of the order, whilst Macdara Cosgrave could return to the side having been ineligible for the last two weekends due to being a dual player with Dublin University. Harry Tector and Lorcan Tucker have been in fine form and proved crucial to success of both Pembroke and the Leinster Lightning in the last two weeks, whilst skipper Jack Tector will round out a strong batting line-up.

Clontarf meanwhile are set to welcome Curtis Campher to their side this weekend after he too returned to Lightning duty in the past couple of weeks following injury. He’ll likely slot into the middle order alongside David and Eoghan Delany, whilst it will be interesting to see whether Clontarf stick to the new formula at the top of the order, where Sam Morgan and Mitchell Thompson opened last weekend with Séamus Lynch at number three. In any case, the addition of Campher makes the team another click stronger at a crucial stage in the season, allowing John McNally and Fionn Hand to slide down a slot each and lengthen the batting order further once more. With the ball, the return of Campher alongside Delany’s upturn in bowling loads suddenly sees Clontarf boasting an attack of no fewer than five seamers who played IP cricket in 2025, with Hand likely to share the new ball duties with Reuben Wilson, whilst McNally’s right arm rounds out the quicks. Cillian McDonnell’s left-arm spin is another very potent weapon, and could prove key to tying down Pembroke’s middle order.

The mid-week runs for Tim Tector in the Leinster Lightning are sure to be cause for optimism in the Pembroke ranks that he’s gotten through the mini-slump which he suffered in recent weeks, and that will mean his wicket is even more important than usual, if Reuben Wilson can knock him over, ‘Tarf will feel they have the upper hand in this tie.

KEY BATTLE: Tim Tector vs Reuben Wilson

PHOENIX VS RUSH

Two sides who will both be desperate for a win to get their season back on track face off in the Park. Phoenix will hope to welcome Sean McNicholl back into their ranks this weekend after he missed last weekend’s action, and he would then be likely to share the opening duties with James Maginnis once again. Ash Bain acquitted himself well on Finals Day, and could force his way into the side as the extra seamer alongside Raghav Grover, who’s bowling has been limited to just a few overs in recent weeks. After that quartet, the spin-bowling trio of leg-spinner Ben White, and left-arm duo George Dockrell and Amish Sidhu will shoulder much of the load for the home side. With the bat, the skipper Shane Getkate leads the way alongside Johit Munjal, whilst Callum O’Byrne has appeared at number three in their most recent league victory over Malahide, whilst Dockrell and Tyrone Kane provide the bulk of the firepower at numbers four and five, ahead of the all-rounders Sidhu and Grover who round out the top 7.

Rush meanwhile still search for their first league win this term, and no doubt scratching their head as to how in the process. Their batting line-up is full of talent, Jack McGee and Alex Neary at the top have produced some good showings throughout the season, whilst Isaac Bird and Nathan McGuire offer some game-winning potential firepower. Abid Taniwal is another clean hitter who can almost win a game single-handedly when he comes off, however the issue has undoubtedly been how few occasions on which they have had more than one batter produce a big score in the same game. On the bowling front, they have seen Allan Eastwood return to action for the 2nd team last week and no doubt would be delighted to have his experience back in the playing 11, whilst Jarred Barnes and Alex Neary have both bowled well in recent weeks. Taniwal’s left-arm seamers have also returned to action, offering an extra yard of pace. The spin is also well rounded in the side, with Bird and McGuire both providing off-breaks in support of the excellent slow left-arm of Nasir Totakhil.

George Dockrell’s double-ton lit up this fixture last year in Kenure, and doubtless Rush won’t want to see a repeat on his home ground, they’ll turn to Nasir Totakhil in the hope he can prise out Phoenix’s star man early on.

KEY BATTLE: George Dockrell vs Nasir Totakhil

BALBRIGGAN VS RAILWAY UNION

A full strength Railway Union side head to Jack Harper Park to take on second-placed Balbriggan in what could be a hotly contested tie. The visitors will be able to call on Liam McCarthy with the new ball, and he’s set to be partnered by either Digamber Mishra or Sumit Kumar. There’s something of an unknown quantity at this level in the inclusion of Shobit Shetty, however he’ll also feature in a bowling unit that includes some in-form spinners in the shape of Abhay Tipnis and Ashil Prakash. The batting is led by Bruce Whaley alongside Prakash at the top of the order, whilst Rob O’Brien at three and skipper Philippe le Roux at four round out a strong top-order. Tipnis, McCarthy and Hayden Hamilton close out a top seven that is doubtless capable of causing the home side plenty of issues this time around.

Balbriggan meanwhile remain without the services of their main strike bowler Matt Hollard, who is as yet to take the field after his hugely successful debut for Ireland at the end of June. This has left them slightly short of seamers, with their last league win in Cork propped up by just Andrew Darroch and Ruan Strauss, although they will welcome back Sebastian de Oliveira this time around. They do however have the very reliable option of skipper Dylan Lues to bowl his off-breaks with the new ball, which then allows Kai Curran and the in-form Jordan Hollard to bowl through the middle overs. With the bat, they have one of the more in-form players in the country in the shape of Chris de Freitas, who generally appears at number four in this team. He follows the settled opening duo of Connor Fletcher and Ghanim Dara, with Cameron Rowe continuing at number three. The all-rounders populate the middle order, with Curran, de Oliveira and Lues all more than capable with the bat, before the explosive Jordan Hollard will get to show off his ball-striking to close out the innings.

The seamers of Liam McCarthy will no doubt be the option that Railway look to in order to claim the big wicket of Chris de Freitas for the home side, however if de Freitas can keep his current good run of form going, it could help the side keep the pressure up on Pembroke at the top of the table.

KEY BATTLE: Chris de Freitas vs Liam McCarthy

NORTH COUNTY VS MERRION

North County come into this tie off the back of a remarkable run chase in their last league outing, led by a century for Suliman Safi, and unbeaten runs for both Jamie Grassi and John Devane, who skippers the side this weekend in the absence of Eddie Richardson. That trio along with Lochie Hardy are the main men in this batting line-up, with Hardy having produced some particularly impressive innings in the first half of the season. With the ball, without Richardson, they will look to Abdul Ghaffar along with Lochie Hardy to open the bowling, whilst Sean Sludds and Jake Devane will support that duo in the seam bowling attack. The spin comes from Brandon Morris and Alan Joseph Mathew, both of whom deliver off-breaks.

Merrion meanwhile will be looking to Corne Botha to lead the way with the ball again this weekend, as he comes in off the back of two consecutive five-wicket bauls in their last two league games. He’s supported by Mikey O’Reilly, who will share the opening duties, whilst Andy Doheny and Sean Stanton are the other two seamers in the line-up. Peter Forkin leads the spinners, where the support is likely to come from Swapnil Modgill and potentially the leg-breaks of Seb Dijkstra. With the bat, the top three will consist of Stephen Doheny and new recruit Raj Undre, with Modgill also in the mix to open the batting. John Anderson and Jamie Forbes round out the middle order in a side which contains plenty of depth.

Corne Botha’s fine form will need to continue here if Merrion are to restrict this North County batting line-up, and if he can take the key wicket of Lochie Hardy, it will give the away side a big chance.

KEY BATTLE: Lochie Hardy vs Corne Botha

LEINSTER VS CIVIL SERVICE

Hedayat Khogiani and Edson Silva have been to the fore with the bat for Civil Service in recent weeks propelling them to their first Premier League victory, rapidly followed by a second and turning that into three from three before finally tasting defeat against Pembroke last time out! Arjun Chandrasekar is the stand-in skipper this weekend in the absence of Deepak Jayachandran, and he’ll feature in the middle order, alongside the likes of Abhishek Arvind Kare, Simranjeet Singh and Vijay Adhikari, alongside the all-round duo of Zaman Safi and Dev Ranolia. There’s a welcome sight in the side this week as Mubasher Siddique will open the bowling once again alongside Noor Ullah, whilst there’s support in the right-arm seam department from Safi, who has arguably been the pick of their bowlers this season without necessarily getting the just rewards.

Bilal Azhar

The home side meanwhile will have to negotiate this tie without Jai Moondra, whilst there remain doubts about the bowling fitness of Tom O’Connor, leaving Bilal Azhar as the one left-armer in the side, he is in tremendous form however, and shares the opening duties with Mark Tonge, before the other seam bowling options including Joey Carroll and potentially Devan Keenan are explored. Meanwhile on the spin bowling front, Saqib Bahadur has been leading the line for much of the season and is set to do so once again, with support from the left-arm offies of Tom Johnson, who has rediscovered some good bowling form in the past couple of weeks. With the bat, Ruben Newton will join Johnson at the top of the order, whilst it’s likely that Tristen de Beer will follow the usual number 3 & 4 of Monil Patel and Younas Ahmadzai into bat. Carroll, Tonge and O’Connor will look to add plenty of impetus later in the innings for the visitors.

The home side will be acutely aware of the danger of Edson Silva, and will hope Bilal Azhar’s good form can see him claiming his scalp early on to put Leinster ahead of the game.

KEY BATTLE: Bilal Azhar vs Edson Silva

CORK COUNTY VS MALAHIDE

For the hosts, Benji Marris will appear at the top of the order along with a new partner this weekend, which could be Sunil Gautam, who has featured at the top of the order previously this term. Josh Hartill will continue at number three, whilst Donald Marakassery, Brian Upman and Tiago Oelefse will bat through the middle order. With the ball, the openers will likely see Zubair Khan and William Shields, with Oelefse the third seamer in the side. They feature three spinners in the side this weekend, with the left-arm orthodox from the skipper Diarmuid Carey, off-breaks from Bakhtyar Nabi, and leggies coming from Nabeel Anjum, meaning the Leesiders are well prepared to take advantage of the generally spin-friendly conditions in the Mardyke this of the season.

William Shields

For the away side Robbie Foulkes to get them off to a good start with the bat, and he is likely to be joined by Alan Reynolds once again in the absence of Matthew Langan, for whom Andrew Sheridan continues to deputise behind the stumps. Adam Doyle at three is the ideal foil for the red-hot Jeremy Martins at number 4, whilst the Ford brothers both made contributions in last weekend’s victories, and good form for that duo could see the Village scoring quickly towards the back end of their innings. On the bowling front, Martins and James Newland make up a potent new-ball pairing, whilst the return of former Leinster Lightning seamer David O’Halloran adds another dimension to the side. Robbie Foulkes’ cutters offer a good variety and plenty of control, whilst Timcy Khanduja’s leggies are a strong spin option for the home side.

Malahide will lean heavily on Robbie Foulkes at the top of the order, and if he can dominate early on against William Shields, the away side will be right on top.

KEY BATTLE: William Shields vs Robbie Foulkes
