  3. Division 7 - 2011 Season Review
27th October 2011 by Paul Reynolds

Division 7 - 2011 Season Review

The most bizarre division of 2011. Merrion 5 dominated, winning their first nine matches, being comfirmed as title winners in early August. The other seven teams were trapped in a bitter dogfight, with teams reguarly moving from promotion battle to relegation battle on the back of a close loss.

Towards the end of the season Malahide 4 dropped away in 8th spot, and YMCA 3 won their last seven matches to take the second promotion spot with some ease, but the others were locked in a battle to avoid the second relegation spot. By the end, only eight points separated the remaining five teams, with Leinster 4 losing the battle (although they were saved when Leinster 5 finished second in Division 8).

Forty five batsmen scored 100 runs in the season, but considering Merrion's dominance (and YMCA's for that matter), none of these batsmen (limiting them to those that batted six times or more) averaged over 50. Normally at least one batsmen will make hay in a division, but Division 7 just saw plenty of runs, at decent averages, without being spectacular

The top three were Chandra Aramalla of Merrion, scoring 371 at 30.92 Eugene Brennan of Wexford Wanderers with 252 at 44, and Alan Godfrey of Leinster with 334 at 37.11. Of those that batted in at least half the matches, the only other player to average over 35 was Kamal Merchant of YMCA with 222 runs at 44.4 - more of Merchant later!

There were five centuries, three against Leinster 4, one for Leinster 4 and one other. Top of the list was Sanjay Saharan's 196 as top (Merrion) played bottom (Malahide) in June. Next was Matthew Quirke, 158* against Leinster 4. This was Quirke's first match for YMCA 3 this season - his next four innings were 0, 0, 34 and 14! In the same match, Dale McDonough-Kinkade scored 101 as YMCA ran up 278-3.

The other two tons were in the same match as Alan Godfrey scored 126 for Leinster against Wexford, and Paul Wise scored 104 when Wexford batted first.

The bowling was all about one player, and one player with a bit more of a pedigree than most players in Division 7. Kamal Merchant's long association with YMCA now sees him mentoring YM's youth players in the 3rds, but there are still plenty of opportunities for him to take centre stage. On top of his 222 runs, Merchant took 25 wickets at 5.16 going at under two runs per over, a great all round performance.

Nine players in all took 15 wickets, with the top four all taking 20. Paul McGrievy of North Kildare came in second place with 24 wickets at 13.29, Simba Mujeni of Knockharley (23 wickets at 8.96) and Liam Giggins (Knockharley as well), 20 at 13.7.

All these bowlers Merchant included were steady rather than spectacular though, with no one taking more than six wickets. Michael Dick bowled the best spell in the division, 6-24 for Bagenalstown 1 against Leinster 4 in early May. Simba Mijeni's performances for Knockharley 1 were not quite as spectacular as for the 2nds, but he still took 6-25 against North Kildare, and Neel Bhandari took 6-28 for YMCA against Merrion, as Merrion lost their first match of the season in mid July
