  3. Division 6 - 2011 Season Review
28th October 2011 by Paul Reynolds

Division 6 - 2011 Season Review

Division 6 had something of an incomplete feel about it. Seven matches were rained off and another three just didn't take place, meaning nearly 20% of the matches were missing.

Laois 2 won the league in a frantic tussle with Dundrum 1, and there was little rhyme or reason to the way the results panned out. Laois only lost in July, once to Old Belvedere and once to Dundrum. There was little opportunity to build up momentum though, as the rain chased them around the province, and the best run they had was three successive wins towards the end of the season.

Dundrum similarly lacked consistency, and lost twice to Old Belvedere. In fact it was the Cabra side who had a bigger say in the destination of the league than anyone else. They beat Dundrum twice and Laois once, but lost their first three games of the season, as well as to strugglers Merrion 4 and Sandyford 1. With a little more consistency, perhaps they would have been promoted. The word consistency is the only consistent thing to come from this division

The individual performances were a little strange as well. Sandyford topped batting and bowling, but yet could only muster 6th spot in the league. Ramji Padmanaban was a model of con.... scored runs regularly. His run from early May to the end of the season was 51*, 66, 111, 45, 33, 25, 26* and 75 - 432 runs at 72. Sandyford's only disappointment would have been that he only played eight matches.

Amazingly, a second Sandyford player was next, Srikanth Boddu with 399 at 33.25. Sharavan Nethula of Old Belvedere was in third spot, with 343 runs at 28.58. Neither of the top two teams figure prominently, with Tariq Islam of Laois, the slayer of Division 11 doing the business in Division 6 as well with 263 runs at 65.75, and Dundrum's leading batsman down at 12th spot - Sonny Sebastien.

Seven centurions in the league, and most have been mentioned already. Matthew Auret has the highest Division 6 innings - 139* for Laois against Old Belvedere. Then Mssrs Boddu and Padmanaban, with centuries Sandyford against Rush (but one in May and one in August - 129 and 11 respectively). Rather embarassingly, an incomplete scorebook led Old Belvedere to report an Unregistered Player as scoring a ton for Sandyford in July. Ronan Kane scored yet another Sandyford hundred, 108 against the Hills in July, whilst Sonny Sebastien scored 106 for Dundrum against Sandyford in the South Dublin derby. Finally  Mufazzal Hussain scored exactly 100 for Old Belvedere against Civil Service.

Remarkably, it's Sandyford who again top the bowling table. This time, Anthony Burke leads with 27 at 12.89 - a truly great performance when his nearest rival only took 17 wickets at 19.35 (Gulab Singh of Old Belvedere). Whilst Burke bowled more overs than anyone else on the league, he also had the best strike rate of all those who bowled 50 overs or more.

Dundrum may not have been to the fore of the batting charts, but Medwin Hippolitus was the leader of the Dundrum attack with 16 at 15.44 -

Only one player did better than five wickets in an innings - step forward Mr Anthony Burke with 7-19 for Sandyford against Rush
