  3. Bagenalstown and Leinster vie for Division 8 title
25th August 2015 by Paul Reynolds

Bagenalstown and Leinster vie for Division 8 title

Amazingly, as we enter the last week in August, and with only eight matches remaining to be played (and with one card still to be processed) , we know very nearly nothing about how the end of season table will look.

Bagenalstown 1 currently lead the way, and Civil Service 2 are at the bottom. But with both teams having four games left, the remaining cricket will have a huge effect on the table.

So what can we say for sure? Leinster 4 and YMCA 4 cannot finish in the bottom two of the table. Even if they fail to garner any more points, they will both finish above Dublin University 2 and Wicklow County 1. Balbriggan 2 can similarly not fall below Trinity (but could come below Wicklow County)

And it follows that all teams apart from Trinity and Wicklow can still win the league. So plenty to play for!

In reality, we can narrowdown the likely promotion and relegation candidates a bit more. Leinster 4 still have to play the bottom two teams - Civil Service 2 and Wicklow County 1, putting htem in  a strong position. Bagenalstown also have a very good chance - they play the same bottom teams, as well as a home clash against Balbriggan. Three good wins for the County Carlow team, and they could lift the Division 8 crown.

YMCA 4 play Knockharley 2 in their last game; and both teams have a chance should they win their remaining matches (Knockharley also play Civil Service twice) and the top two slip up. Balbriggan 2 travel to leaders Bagenalstown - and again with a win, and other results, could still finish towards the top.

At the bottom, Wicklow County have tough matches against Leinster and Bagenalstown, but shouldn't be written off. A win in either match could bring safety. Similarly, Civil Service will come bottom if they lose all their last four matches - but conversely if they win them all, it will be a very different story. Watch this space!

Division 8 batting - qualification 100 runs

The mark of a quality batsman is whether they can score 250 runs at an average of over 40, and Division 8 has four such players. YMCA under 17 player, Nathan Johns comes top, with three slightly older contenders - David Rice, Nadul Srimal Jasinghe and Syed Mehdi all having similarlyu excellent seasons (so far).

Division 8 highest partnerships for each wicket

Nadul Srimal Jasinghe and Bernard O'Mara put on 208 for the 1st wicket in June, the highest recorded partnership for Bagenalstown since all partnerships were recorded at the begining of 2014. Unfortunately it was in a losing cause!
