  3. PEMBROKE DOMINATE IN CASTLE AVENUE - IBI CORPORATE FINANCE PREMIER LEAGUE ROUND-UP (JUNE 28TH)
28th June 2025 by Mick Cotter

PEMBROKE DOMINATE IN CASTLE AVENUE - IBI CORPORATE FINANCE PREMIER LEAGUE ROUND-UP (JUNE 28TH)

A massive weekend of cricket in the province kicked off with last year's league champions kicking their charge towards a title defence up a gear, as they swatted aside a below-par Clontarf outfit with a minimum of fuss.

The hosts won the toss and chose to bat first, however they lost Séamus Lynch and Eoghan Delany in quick succession early on, before a 79 run stand between Mitchell Thompson (37) and Pat Xie (46) put them back on track.

Paul Lawson took two vital wickets for Pembroke

That pair both fell in quick succession however, and in spite of David Delany's best efforts, the return in tandem of Paul Lawson and Byron McDonough saw the hosts tumble from 134/4 to 143/7. Gavin Hoey also claiming a brace of wickets to put Pembroke right on top, before Andy Balbirnie claimed the wicket of Delany for a top score of 47 to round out the innings.

Byron McDonough was the pick of the away side's bowlers

Pembroke had a short session to bat before tea, and made full use of it, after a flurry of early boundaries they lost Tim Tector for 17, however Balbirnie and Harry Tector guided them to 52/1 after 8 overs at which time the interval was taken.

The latter was dismissed for 28, before Tucker (23) and Balbirnie added a further 44 to take the result beyond question. Having passed 50, Balbirnie and Blake MacDonald thundered towards the finishing post, the latter launching two massive 6s down the ground in his unbeaten 17-ball 26.

By the time Andy Balbirnie was dismissed, he had made 65 of the 157 on the board, providing the backbone of the innings and ensuring Pembroke were on the brink of victory that they would secure by 6 wickets with in excess of 20 overs to spare.

Elsewhere, in Jack Harper Park, Railway Union pieced together 270 all out in the final over of their innings, Rob O'Brien once again in the runs with the top score of 56, whilst Hedayat Khogiani (46) supported him alongside Srihan Karpe (31) and Liam McCarthy (28). Sebastian D'Oliveira the pick of the bowlers for the 'Brig, taking 4/70. Muhammad Sinan then proceeded to blow the hosts away, taking 5/26 in a spell they could never recover from, as 'The Patch' ran out 122 run winners.

The story of the day was in Rush, where Phoenix piled up 448/5 in their 50 overs, this is the fourth highest total in the history of Senior cricket in the province, and the highest in the limited overs era, passing out Clontarf's total of 443/7 in Kenure in 2016. Today George Dockrell was the hero, making 202*, supported by 100 from Eknoor Singh and 57 for Joe Cotgreave. A five wicket haul for Amish Sidhu led the way for the away side, as they ran out impressive winners, restricting Rush to just 202 all out in 44 overs.

In The Vineyard, Leinster made their way to 293 all out in their reduced 44 over innings, Tom Johnson leading the way with 76, supported by 59 from Monil Patel and 45 for Younas Ahmadzai. Ollie Horlock was the pick of the bowlers for the home side, taking 4/54 in his 9 overs, whilst there were also two wickets for Cian Nulty. The Hills' response started sedately, however after the rain break they were left needing to up the ante significantly. They couldn't manage this however, as Saqib Bahadur tore through their middle order, taking 5/28 from his 7 overs, before a century stand for the 9th wicket between Cian Nulty (68*) and Shazil Ahmed (32*) saw them finishing 51 runs short after 33 overs.

Cork County's visit to Malahide proved fruitful as they were indebted to 88 from Mark Andrianatos, supported by 66 for Brian Upman, as they put together 265/7 from their 50 overs. There were also contributions from Benji Marris (31), Sunil Gautam (29) and Raj Undre (26*) in a good effort for the Leesiders. Kelvin Donnelly the pick of the bowlers for Malahide, taking 3/52, whilst there was also a two-for taken by Jeremy Martins. The hosts reply was going along nicely, however when the rain arrived at 82/2, their task became much stiffer, as having returned they needed to make 78 from just 48 balls to win the game. Two wickets for Ehsan O'Sullivan quickly stunted their hopes, and as the run rate climbed Malahide's chances of victory became more and more remote. O'Sullivan and skipper Diarmuid Carey continued to rip through the middle order, O'Sullivan proving to be the star of the show as he finished with 6/16 from just 4 overs, as Cork County won by 42 runs.

In Anglesea Road, North County batted first and put up what looked to be an imposing total in 287 all out off the final ball of their reduced 48 over innings. Jamie Grassi top-scored with 71, whilst Suliman Safi also passed 50 as every member of the top 6 made at least 22 in helping the side to a good total. Jack Atkinson was the pick of the bowlers for the home side, taking 3/50. In reply, Merrion lost Swapnil Modgill early on to the bowling of Eddie Richardson, however an excellent unbroken stand between Stephen Doheny (46) and Connor Blaxall-Hill (32) took them to 101/1 just short of 19 overs, unfortunately however the rain set in, and in spite of the best efforts of the home side, they just ran out of time to get the game completed.
