Deciding on the best all-rounder for the year includes an element of subjective judgement. The main awards usually involve a committee who try to weight the relative merits of bowlers and batters, taking into account averages as well as total runs and wickets.
Perhaps the ultimate all-rounder achievement is through qualification for both the individual batting and bowling tables. Nine players have achieved this feat since senior competitions started in 1919. But only one recent player, Naseer Shoukat, is in this list and three others who played their last match this century. It is unlikely that any will be added to this list.
Naseer Shaukat is 4th in the all time list of senior all-rounders (686 wkts, 9,779 runs).
Creating standardised all-rounder tables requires a different methodology, although it has its own element of subjective judgement. To get a sense of the challenge, compare the relative worth of wickets and runs in 1919 and 2024. In 1919 the average runs per wicket was 14.2. By last year the average had gone up to 22.9.
Perhaps someday a better comparison of players from different eras will be put in place, taking into account these differences. For the moment we will continue with the conventional ratio of runs to wickets of 20:1.
The full criteria for inclusion in the Leinster Senior Career All-Rounder Table is as follows:
WEIGHTING
Run = 1 point
Wicket = 20 points
We do not include anything for catches.
QUALIFICATION
Minimum 10,000 points. At least 3,333 in each discipline.
At the end of 2024, there were 66 players who were included in the Leinster Career All-Rounder Table. Four players, who took part in 2024, continue to improve their standing in the table. But there is only one active player who currently is within 1000 points of qualifying. This person is Joey Carroll (Leinster, The Hills, Phoenix) who has 9,439 points at the end of 2024.
Joey Carroll who needs 561 more points for 10,000 in the senior all-rounder tables.
