1st October 2018 by Paul Reynolds

2018 Season Review - Clontarf retain Alan Murray Cup

Alan Murray Cup stats

Leading all time run scorer (2011-2018) - Andrew Poynter (Clontarf) - 1559 runs @ 43.31

Most runs in an Alan Murray Cup season - Lorcan Tucker (Pembroke) - 360 runs (2017)

Highest score - Lorcan Tucker (Pembroke) - 152 - Pembroke 1 vs Balbriggan 1 - Jack Harper Memorial - 8 Jul 2017

Leading all time wicket taker (2011-2018) - Paul Lawson (Pembroke) - 61 wkts @ 16.25 (rpo 6.67) and Joe Carroll (Leinster) - 61 wkts & 12.51 (rpo 6.16)

Most wickets in an Alan Murray Cup season - Connor D'Arcy (Clontarf) - 20 wkts (2014)

Best bowling - Terry Richardson - 6-4 - North County 1 vs The Hills 2 - Inch - 17 July 2011

Most matches - Joe Morrissey (Clontarf) (2011-2018) - 45

Club with most wins - (8) Clontarf (1970, 1972, 1989, 1999, 2011, 2014, 2017, 2018), Merrion (1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2011, 2002, 2005, 2015) and YMCA (1955, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1990, 1991, 1993, 2012) *Some sources question when the Alan Murray Cup actually became a Cricket Leinster competition. Pembroke ran a T20 competition before the 1960s. YMCA's 1955 win comes in this category.

Highest team score - 263-5 - North County 1 vs Malahide 1 - Inch - 30 July 2013

Lowest team score - 43 all out - The Hills 2 vs North County 1 - Inch - 17 July 2011

Clontarf retained the Alan Murray Cup on August 4th, when they beat Merrion by 6 wickets, lifting the trophy for a record equalling 8th time. Joe Morrissey's spell of 4-15 was the match winning performance for Clontarf, as he took the wickets of John Anderson, Dom Joyce, Dave Langford-Smith and Michael Lewis, as Merrion collapsed from 50-1 to 55-6.

Clontarf's 8th win was their 4th in the last eight seasons, and although they couldn't go on to retain their All Ireland T20 crown, they remain the pre-eminent T20 side in the province.

It was an eventful run to the final for Clontard, who tied with Munster Heat in the group stage before going on to beat them in the quarter final and Leinster in the semi final. Merrion's route to the final was also less than smooth, with a loss to Munster Heat in the group stage, before knock out wins over Phoenix and YMCA.

For all T20's reputation as a game for young players, it was two of the most experienced teams in the competition who made it to the final. Clontarf were the oldest, with an average age of 30.6, Balbriggan next with 27.2 followed by Merrion at 27. At the other end of the scale, YMCA were the youngest team in the comp, with an average age of 22.3. Clontarf may well need younger blood if they are to continue their dominance.
