Thursday June 5th saw the latest instalment of the U23 District Cup, South Leinster travelled to College Park off of the back of two disappointing rain offs against both North Leinster and Trinity respectively. Trinity, meanwhile, came into this fixture off the back of a chastening loss at the hand of North Leinster but will be broadly pleased with the start they had made in this competition going unbeaten until that point.
Trinity won the toss and elected to bat, after a brief delay for rain they got their batting effort underway. Mathew Langan got the Trinity effort off and running with a well-made 55, however South Leinster found good success with the new ball reducing Trinity to 50/3.
Then came the mainstay off the Trinity batting effort in the form of Swaroop Somashekar who formed a formidable partnership with Langan as they put on 84 for the 4th wicket. After Kathan Shah removed Langan, one of 5 he picked up in an outstanding spell of bowling the Trinity batting effort petered out somewhat as they finished on 191 all out in just 43.3 overs.
South Leinster got their chase underway in the form of Ethan Clarke and Daniel Forkin, the later falling foul of an unfortunate mix up in the middle early on. It was steady progress for South Leinster before drinks as they slowly made their way despite the loss of regular wickets.
Gethin Kelleher was the bedrock of the South Leinster effort, he eventually finished on 72* as others batted around him. A flurry of wickets left it to Kathan Shah to finish 21* and bring his team over the line alongside Kelleher with 2 wickets in hand and more than 6 overs to spare.
The next instalment of this competition comes on the 11th of June as Trinity take on North Leinster at College Park in a 50 over clash.
