MERRION WIN SENIOR 2 CUP IN CONVINCING STYLE (3.8.2026)

A remarkable all-round effort from Grant Glutz was the catalyst for success for Merrion this afternoon as they claimed the LHW Financial Planning Senior 2 Cup by 99 runs against Terenure.

Having won the toss, captain Hugh Kennedy chose to bat first and after the early loss of Denny David, saw the score advance to 60 before the dismissal of Olliver Mollins led to a collapse that saw 3 wickets fall for just 12 runs.

That brought Anthony and Grant Glutz together, and after the latter had survived an extremely tight LBW first ball, and then a tough caught and bowled chance, they batted with an excellent tempo throughout the middle overs.

Anthony Glutz reached 50, however was dismissed without adding to that total, before Grant Glutz survived another chance on 55. That proved costly for Terenure as he and Peter Forkin added 61 for the 6th wicket, before Glutz was eventually dismissed for 83.

The Merrion tail wagged to 284/7 from their 50 overs, as only Zeeshan Mumtaz and Niqash Ali could manage much penetration, claiming two wickets apiece.

Terenure's innings started poorly, with the loss of both Abu Baker, Pratik Rao and Niqash Ali all caught behind early in the piece. When Gareth Morgan was fifth out, the score was just 54 and the target of 285 looked a million miles away.

Mustafa Ali and Colm Morgan added 43 for the sixth wicket, however when Ali was adjudged LBW for 28 he was the first of three wickets for just 17 runs which in essence finished the game.

The final trio of Vishnu Sadanandan, top scorer with 33*, Saddam Gul and Ananthkrishnan Parasarthy added a further 71 between them, however when Grant Glutz returned and claimed his third wicket the score was 185, and Merrion ran out 99 run winners.
