  3. Review of the season - RSA Division 12
7th October 2012 by Paul Reynolds

Review of the season - RSA Division 12

How the league was won - Something of a repeat of Division 13. Greystones were initially put in Division 9, but then were accommodated at a lower level to aid their development. It proved far too low, as they romped to the Division 12 title at their first attempt. Wexford Wanderers 2 clung to the coat-tails of Greystones for as long as possible - but in may respects their hopes were over in April. Wexford lost their first match to Pembroke in April, and were up against it from then on. A possible winner takes all match between Greystones and Wexford in September, but the Wicklow side won by 128 runs, confirming the first silverware in the club's history.

How dreams turned to nightmares - Greystones and Wexford may have run away with the league, but the relegation zone was a crowded battleground. Old Belvedere 3, Phoenix 5, Clontarf 6, Dundalk 2 and Pembroke 6 all had a chance to stay up. Dundalk 2 and Pembroke 6 were the unlucky sides, and in a league so tight, it's always tempting to look at what if. Dundalk lost matches to Clontarf and Phoenix in the last few weeks of the season - victories in either would have saved them. Similarly, a win for Pembroke against Clontarf in September would have been enough to save them and send Clontarf down. It wasn't to be.

Heroes with the willow - Over a quarter of all matches in Division 12 were rained off - a figure that was much worse for Division 12 than any other division. Run aggregates were therefor much lower in this league - only two players passed 250 runs, and their identity will not surprise many. David Drane scored 276 runs at 55.2 and David Russell, 260 at 43.3 as Greystones ran away with the league.

Hell for leather - The bowling was a much more widespead affair, with two clubs further down the league taking the honours. Only eight players took ten wickets, whilst there was a tie in top spot. John Anders of Phoenix stepped out of the shadow of his children and took 18 wickets at 11.33, whilst Syed Abdul Nadeem of Old Belvedere did even better, taking 18 wickets at 7.0

Days to remember - If one match summed up Greystones' season, it was probably the match against Pembroke in Sydney Parade in August. Pembroke scored 150 from 40 overs, which wasn't enough, but may have given them a chance. The two Davids - Drane and Russell had other ideas, knocking off the runs in 22 overs, chalking up a 152 unbeaten opening partnership.

Stat you may have missed - On June 3rd, Craig Senior scored 37* for Pembroke 6 against Wexford Wanderers 2. Nothing remarkable about that you may think, but it was the highest score by a number 11 in any Open Comps cricket in 2012
