  3. Review of the season- RSA Division 8
26th October 2012 by Paul Reynolds

Review of the season- RSA Division 8

How the league was won - There was only ever one team in the race for Division 8. Clontarf 4 didn't lose their first game until August 19th - and that was to be the only game they lost. They twice beat both of their rivals (Balbriggan 2 and Dundrum 2) and were never seriously threatened in pursuit of the Division 8 title. The second promotion spot was much closer, and with only one match left, either Balbriggan 2, Dundrum 2 or Leinster 5 could come second. In the end Balbriggan 2 chased 257 to beat Leinster 5 by six wickets, and snatched second from Dundrum 2 by two points.

How dreams turned to nightmares -  The relegation places were effectitvely decided by the OCC's new strict approach on sides who give walkovers. Wicklow County 2 gave three and Merrion 6 two, which meant a 15 point per match conceded penalty. Even without this though, both teams struggled. Wicklow's only victory was over Merrion, whilst the Anglesea Roaders only beat Halverstown and ..... Wicklow County

Heroes with the willow - Four players could be said to have been far above the rest of those who played regularly in Division 8. Bizarrely though, none of them were from Clontarf. The strong bowling attack of the league winners (see below) meant that they never needed to chase many runs, and their batsmen's tallies were therefore limited. In fact no Clontarf batsman scored over 150 runs. The four who were far above their colleagues and opponents were Ali Qasim of Balbriggan (243 at 34.71), Raj Valson (again of Balbriggan) with 265 at 44.17, and then the pair of Leinster players - Khizer Khan (322 at 35.78) and Rompey Chhabra (434 at 62). They were the only four players who passed 200 runs.

Hell for leather - Clontarf's title was based on their bowling attack. In ten league matches, they bowled the opposition out for less than one hundred in five of them. Two bowlers led the attack, with many more pitching in with performances throughout the season. Aidan McDonald played in all ten league matches, taking 19 wickets at 9.21 in only 70 overs. He was backed up by skipper Frankie Furlong who came just behind him in the wicket taking tally, with 17 at 9.65. Andrew Delany and Anthony Cole also broke the ten wicket barrier. It's ot hard to see why Clontarf won the league.

Days to remember -  Game of the season had to be the winner takes all promotion battle at the end of the season. Rompey Chhabra scored 122 as Leinster amassed 257. Balbriggan needed to win by four wickets or better to be promoted, and Leinster needed to win by more than 60 runs. At 1-2, it looked all over, and even at 70-3 the match was very much Leinster's to lose. However a partnership of 81 between Sunny Singh (57) and Ali Qasim, and then 109 between Aamir Shahzad (39*) and Qasim (106*) saw Balbriggan home in the most unlikley of circumstances.

Stat you may have missed - Three players in Division 8 scored a 50 during the season, as well as taking five wicket in an innings. The threesome were Ali Qasim and Sunny Singh of Balbriggan and Inderjit Singh of Malahide
