  3. Review of the season - RSA Division 7
5th November 2012 by Paul Reynolds

Review of the season - RSA Division 7

How the league was won - On the surface, Division 7 was a league in which the major decisions were decided in the committee rooms rather than on the pitch. Merrion who finished in second, and the bottom three (of which more can be found out below), all received a points deduction at the end of the season for not playing matches. In reality though, Merrion's season was already over at this stage, and Leinster 4 finished well clear. The season started well in April, with Merrion 5 defeating Leinster by five wickets.

Leinster responded to this by winning their next nine (although they also had points awarded against them for a disagreement on the suitability of the Knockharley square), and by the time they lost to North Kildare in September, it was all over and Leinster had won the league. Merrion were there and there abouts, but losses to Pembroke, Leinster and Wexford in the middle of the season dented their chances. The other chasers - North Kildare and Knockharley finished third and fourth, but they were always a good way back.

How dreams turned to nightmares -  Pembroke 4 flirted with relegation, but kept coming up with wins when it mattered. They overcame The Hills and Wexford twice in the last weeks of the season, which was enough to lift them clear of trouble. Bagenalstown got their act together in the early weeks of Autumn, and beat Pembroke, Knockharley and Wexford, in the process jumping over the two teams who incurred the wrath of the OCC.

Wexford Wanderers won three of their first five, and were looking good on the evening of July 21st - after a 83 run over Merrion. That was to be the last victory of the season though, a similar story as was heard in The Hills. They won three of their first four matches (at least those that beat the rain), but that was it. The last seven matches included four losses, tow matches rained off, and a match that was not played due to the Irish Senior Cup final.

Heroes with the willow - Batting in Division 7 had a touch of the mediocrity about it (apologies to all those involved!) Although 36 players passed 100 runs, only eight passed 200, and none of those could be said to have dominated the league (which may be no bad thing).

Of those eight, two did it without scoring a 50 (Anthony Bellew of Knockharley and Will Houston of Merrion) and three others averaged less than 30 (see the list below for details). That leaves three others - Bard Ovended of Leinster, Neil Vorster of North Kildare and Michael Kerr of Merrion who all had decent seasons, but probably not ones that you'd tell the grand-children about in fifty years time.

Hell for leather - Two players were far above the others in terms of Division 7 wicket taking. Fiachra Tucker came second in the overall list, taking 20 wickets for Pembroke 4 at 11.20, whilst this was trumped by Susheel Kumar of Leinster who took 27 wickets at 8.26. Neither are likely to be seen in Division 7 again - Tucker made his Pembroke first team debut towards the end of the season  and although Kumar didn't play any higher than Leinster 4, his chance will surely come in 2013.

Days to remember -  Michael Kerr of Merrion will have many seasons ahead of him, but may never start of a season in the same manner as 2012. In what turned out to be a clash between champions and runners up, Kerr scored 131 out of 214-6. He came to the wicket with Merrion in some trouble, having lost two early wickets, but he dominated the rest of the match. The rest of the season didn't quite live up to the start, but that innings will always be there in the memory.

Stat you may have missed - A complicated one, so listen carefully. Six of the eleven "Highest scores by position" were against Pembroke 4. Those batsmen who blunted Sydney Parade bowling attacks were Badal Kumar (Leinster - 76 at #2), Chris Ousthuizen (Leinster - 121 at #3), Brendan Iype (Bagenalstown - 68 at #6),  Praveen Konety (Merrion - 59* at #7), Guy Donald (North Kildare - 29 at #10) and Jonathan Walshe (North Kildare - 15* at #11)
