  3. Participation in the RSA OCD1 League
9th September 2014 by Eddie Lewis

Participation in the RSA OCD1 League

Although the 2014 cricket season will continue for a few weeks yet, as individual leagues finish it is possible to extract out some details on team and individual performances. The full averages, which includes cup as well as league matches, will follow. We start with participation details for Division 1.

Appearances

Being able to field a regular team is an important part of ensuring overall success. Sometimes this can be affected by exams, the number of university players, injury and representative duties but generally the fewer players turning out for a team in a season signals continuity.

This season 163 players took part in at least one D1 match. Of these 22 participated in all fourteen league games. 32 players appeared only once. The number of players turning out each year has not varied much over the past four years – 2011 [161], 2012 [168] and 2013 [162].

At this point it is not possible from the registration records to provide an accurate age profile for D1 cricketers. This will have to wait for next year although we may be able to backdate the information once we have a more accurate fix on the date of births.

It is possible, however, to provide an estimate of the number of home grown players, something that is important in assessing the effectiveness of our youth development structures. In 2014, 120 players came through the domestic ranks and 43 from outside the country.

The full breakdown between clubs is set out below.
