  3. Last two finals of the Open Comps season
19th August 2015 by Michael Sharp

Last two finals of the Open Comps season

The coming weekend sees the completion of Cricket Leinster’s cup finals for 2015.

Minor Cup (Michael McGuinness Trophy)

Dundrum 3 v Swords 2 on Saturday 22nd August at Laois C.C.  – 12.30 p.m.

In 1926, the then Leinster Cricket Union introduced a Minor Cup for teams below Junior Cup level, that trophy having in existence for several  years. It was competed for up until 1969. A restructuring then saw the introduction of the Middle Cup and what had been the Minor Cup trophy was reallocated to that. By 1986, further growth in numbers indicated that a new cup competition was required. Michael McGuinness of Rush C.C, and a long-standing member of the then Junior Branch Committee donated a trophy and the new Minor Cup was introduced.

Of this year’s finalists, the Dundrum club won this cup in 2009. This team has already won this year’s Russell Court T20 Cup. Swords are contesting their first final at this level and will be hoping to go one better than their first team, who were defeated in the Intermediate Cup final last weekend.

Teams:

Dundrum: from – S.Sudarsanan (capt.),  P. Bhardwaj,  S.Daniel,  S.Dev,  J.Devaskutty,  J.Joseph,         A. Kesavav,  S. Kochappu,  P.Kumar,  S.Kumar,  S. Mohan,  M.Sajan.

Swords: TBA

Minor 2 Cup (Sean Stanley Trophy)

Carlow v Clontarf 6 on Sunday 23rd August at Druid’s Glen (Greystones C.C.) – 12.30 p.m.

In 2014 increased growth in numbers of teams meant the OCC introduced a new cup competition. Greystones C.C. donated a trophy in memory of their late member Sean Stanley. The first final was held on the then Greystones ground in the town but this year sees the first final in their new home at Druid’s Glen. Leinster won the trophy in its inaugural year so both of this year’s finalists are seeking their first success in the competition. The Clontarf club have of course taken every other Leinster trophy at some point but Carlow are in their first year of competitive cricket.

Teams:

Carlow: (from) Manik Islam (capt),  Asad Ali, Rocky Butt, Mohammed rng, ismail,  Arsalan Khalid, Zeeshan Khan, Tahir Mohammed, Younus Mohammed , Zamal Mohammed, Qasim Raiza,  Sunil kant trikha, Vishnu Yannam.
