Last night at Anglesea Road Merrion won the Pilkington Cup to add to the Women’s Senior Cup they won last week. For the second time this year Leinster were the opponents.
Played over two nights, Merrion batted first and posted a very competitive 178 off 30 overs. The backbone of the Merrion innings was provided by half centuries from teenagers Blaidhnaid Breslin and Elaine Tice.
Last night the Leinster innings started well as Amy Kenealy and Sharon Smyth put on 50 for the first wicket in good time. But some aggressive running between the wicket eventually led to Leinster’s undoing as Amy Kenealy was run out for a top score of 35. Thereafter wickets fell regularly helped along by two further run outs. In the end Leinster after 30 overs Leinster had reached 140/8, losing by 38 runs.
