It is not often that a player reached the milestone of 10,000 runs in Leinster Senior cricket. The last person to do so was Jeremy Bray in 2013. Since Senior Competitions started in 1919 there have been only 14 players who have reached this total. Joining their ranks this year, and becoming the 14th, is John Anderson.
While most of his runs have been made for Merrion, his career aggregate includes 1,458 playing for Railway Union in 2005 and 2006. When he returned to Ireland in 2008 he joined Merrion and has competed in every year [except the Covid year of 2020] since.
With a career average of 51.29 he is only the third player to have an average of over 50, behind only Bray. His most runs scored in a single year was 1000 runs in season 2017. Over his career he has completed 65 half-centuries and 22 centuries, the 4th highest number of centuries in Senior Cricket.
Senior Competitions consist of the Leinster Senior League [Premiership and Championship], the Leinster Senior League Cup and the Leinster Senior Cup. Anderson has also been one of the most prolific scorers in the Irish Senior Cup. While records for the early years of the competition are not complete, in the period from 2003 to the present he has the highest individual aggregate runs [2676], the second highest average [68.62] of anyone scoring more than 1000 runs, and the most centuries [8].
