  3. Irish Senior and National Cup Semi-Finals
13th August 2016 by Eddie Lewis

Irish Senior and National Cup Semi-Finals

Four matches - three involving Leinster teams - as the places in the Irish Senior Cup and National Cup finals are decided. In the NCU Waringstown [the holders] play Instonians and look the more likely to reach their scenond final in a row.  The interest in Leinster will all be focussed on Anglesea Road where Merrion take on YMCA. Merrion have a good record in the ISC and bring a lot of experience to the match having succeeded at this stage of the competition four times since 2010. But their recent form has been mixed and they do not have the benefit of an overseas player. YMCA, on the other hand, have managed to pull away from the bottom of the Division 1 league table over the past few weeks and have the confidence gained from a previous win over Merrion earlier in the season and a victory in the Leinster Senior Cup. So YMCA start as favourites but at this stage in a cup competition anything is possible.

In the National Cup, Laois, the only non-ranked side remaining in the competition, take on Newbuildings. Laois are not doing well in D3 league but do have good cup pedigree having just retaining the Leinster Senior II Cup. They will be happy with the tag of underdogs against a North West side currently lying third in their equivalent to Division 2.

In the final game Woodvale take on Rush. The NCU side are in good form this year and are pressing for promotion to the premier Division. With home advantage they will fancy their chances. But Rush are the holders of the National Cup and with their strong batting lineup know that they are capable of beating any side in the competition. Again it will be an interesting test of the respective strengths of the two D2 leagues north and south.

The match in Anglesea Road is down as a 12.00 start and in Laois it is 12.30.
