  3. Division 2 set up for grandstand finish
1st September 2015 by Paul Reynolds

Division 2 set up for grandstand finish

With Division 2 a week ahead of its higher counterpart, the finals rites of the league are much closer to being read.

Top of the table The Hills played a YMCA 2 team who needed to come uo with the biggest shock of the year to give themselves the chance of escaping the ckutches of relegation. It wasn't to be, as the class of Max Sorensen blew the YM batting away. Sorensen took 6-17 (his best for The Hills), as YM made only 64. That was to be no way near enough, and the leaders took a (crucuial) maximum tally of 25 points.

Phoenix needed a big win to give themselves a chance of stealing the Division 2 trophy from under The Hills' nose, and they succeeded with a 79 run win over Terenure. At 102-5, Adam Chester faced a precarious situation, but he blazed his way to another tremendous total - 70 from 59 balls. That enabled Phoenix to reach 223 all out, which ended up being more than enough, as Terenure were bowled out for 120. Crucially that was enough for Phoenix to also pick up maximum points (the match had been reduced to 39 oves per side). It means that Phoenix need to get 24 points in their match against The Hills next week. Any less, and The Hills win the league.

In the other match, Balbriggan had a solid win over Rush. Kahlid Bilal took a career best 5-28 as Rush were dismissed for 158. Rain reduced that total to 151, and then Balbriggan's innings was interupted when they were on 83-2 from 24 overs - 20 runs ahead of DLS.

Highest Batting average in Division 2 (Richard Bruton Cup) - (current qualification - 250 runs)

No change from last week. Shahid Iqbal made only 4, and Joe Carroll wasn't playing.
