  3. 1000 runs in a season - a rare achievement
14th July 2013 by Eddie Lewis

1000 runs in a season - a rare achievement

Gerry Byrne has previously commented on the number of centuries scored this year – and there were more this weekend. But what of the overall aggregate of runs in a season. Over the years a few players have managed to score 1,000 runs or more. With the average runs per match rising all the time can we expect someone to reach the 1,000 threshold this year. At the halfway mark this season there are two players who have reached 500 runs, Pat Collins [Railway] and Lynal Jansen [Rush].

In the history of Leinster Senior cricket, 1,000 runs have been scored in a single season only 19 times by 11 players. It has been done four times by Jeremy Bray and three by Angus Dunlop. The most runs in a season was 1,273 by Bray for Phoenix in 2000. This was also at the best average of 115.73 [only time a player has scored 1,000 runs at an average of over 100].

Although nobody has reached 1,000 runs since 2004 [perhaps reflecting the fewer number of games played in the current competition structure], the achievement of this record is still a fairly recent phenomenon with the first time a 1,000 runs exceeded being in 1981 [N P Daniels for Carlisle].

It is also probably worth mentioning that only three Irish born players achieved this feat, Alan Lewis, Angus Dunlop and Jason Molins.

The full list of occasions when 1,000 runs were scored in a season is as follows:
