YM and Instonians quietly do their thing

The Clontarf vs Waringstown Irish Senior Cup quarter final was the match that took all the headlines last weekend, but the result of that tie possibly didn't have as much impact on this week's rankings as you'd expect.

Waringstown were impressive in beating Clontarf on Sunday, but on Saturday they lost to CIYMS in a stunning NCU Challenge Cup semi final. The win and a loss means Waringstown actually drop a place, overtaken by YMCA who were impressive in disposing of Pembroke in Cricket Leinster's Senior Cup semi final. Clontarf stay unchanged in second, whilst Instonians quietly went about their business, winning two matches and extending their lead at the top.

The Shaw's Bridge side beat bottom of the table Carrickfergus on Sunday, following their achievement in getting to their third Challenge Cup final in four years by beating CSNI on Saturday.

In the North West, Coleraine and Donemana shared the two (cup and league) encounters over the weekend, but it was Coleraine who managed to sneak back into 8th spot, reclaiming the North West's top club spot. There really is very little between Coleraine, Donemana and Brigade, the one, two, three in the NW league.

There was plenty of movement further down the table, with the teams between 30 and 39 all shifting places. In reality there is so little between the teams in this group - how would you rank St Johnston, Ballymena, Phoenix, Drummond, Terenure, Woodvale, Balbriggan, Lurgan, Rush and Glendermott? St Johnston's first home win in the league in a long time, saw them move to the top of that pile, and Drummond's National Cup win over Laois, as well as with good league form, saw them move up seven places.

This weekend sees league action across the provinces. In Leinster Division 1, Malahide (15) host Merrion (5), YMCA (3) should prevail over North County (13), Railway Union (19) are slight favourites over Cork County (23) and Clontarf (2) play Pembroke (10) in the only all top 10 clash in Leinster.

In Division 2, Leinster (25) have home advantage over Rush (36), Phoenix (30) have a tough one against The Hills (7), and Balbriggan (34) play YMCA 2.

In North West Premier League, Donemana (9) are favourites against Eglinton (17), Ardmore (27) have a chance against Bready (20), Brigade (11) should win against St Johnston (28) and Coleraine (8) should beat a falling Strabane (16)

Finally in the NCU, Carrickfergus (21) have a chance of a win against Ballymena (29), CIYMS (14) get to test their credentials against Waringstown (4), top team Instonians (1) travel to Civil Service North (6) and Lisburn (18) play North Down (12)
