  3. Two finals and an important semi-final
23rd July 2012 by Eddie Lewis

Two finals and an important semi-final

Some fine weather saw the second two RSA Open Competitions Finals of the season - the YMCA Salver and the Tillain Cup. A good crowd at Rathmines saw two contrasting finals. In the first Dundrum posted a solid score [135] from their twenty overs and Clontarf III in reply quickly fell behind. But Clontarf someone managed to keep in the game and in the final push, with schoolboy David Delany taking the lead, came very close to overtaking the Dundrum total. In the end Dundrum won by one run. A very exciting game.

In the second match Merrion II took on Old Belvedere. Winning the toss Merrion posted a competitive score of 142 with Niall Browne batting through for a well compiled 50.  As in the first match, the second innings started badly for the batting side with Robbie Ensor and High Kennedy taking early wickets and holding the initial run chase in check. But unlike the first match there was no late comeback and a combination of excellent fielding and tight bowling meant that Merrion were to run out as comfortable winners by 53 runs.

At the same time as the finals in Rathmines, the weather delayed RSA Senior Cup SF was taking place in Castle Avenue. Despite an excellent 93 by Conor Mullen the Railway score of 246 always looked a little light in 60 overs on a easy paced batting track. But it still required a significant contribution from a Clontarf batter to secure the win. It was  time for captain Bill Coghlan to step up and he obliged with an undefeated century. The match was effectively determined by the partnership between Coghlan and Eoghan Delaney who scored another 50 to continue his good form with Trinity. In the end a Clontarf win by seven wickets and they go on to play Pembroke in the final next Saturday in YMCA.
