Based on learnings from the first two years of this competition, the District Cup for 2025 has 3 competing teams - Dublin University, North Leinster and South Leinster (akin to the old IPs prior to 2013).

The competition is intended as a high-performance pathway competition for players with potential to achieve selection for the Leinster Lightning Bolts and/or the higher levels.

It has therefore been designed to maximise ‘representative’ opportunities for such players in particular those who no longer qualify for underage representative competitions but have potential to play at a higher level subject to development, exposure/opportunity and performance at both club and district levels.
