  3. Highest Successful Run Chases
24th March 2019 by Eddie Lewis

Highest Successful Run Chases

Those interested in these sorts of things might like to note that a new report in CricketStatz lists the most successful run chases in Open Competitions [the records go back to 2011]. The highest run chase took place in May 2012 when Phoenix 2 chased down a Leinster 2 score of 333/7 by two wickets in the Senior II Cup. Vish Vaidyanazthan [104] and Amit Battan [79] led the way for Phoenix.

In all there are 10 recorded successful chases of 300 or more since 2011.

The eagle eyed among you will have noticed that in 8th spot there is an apparent anomaly [and perhaps should not be included].  Leinster are recorded as 305/10. Because of a slow over rate Railway were penalised and their score was adjusted to that after 48 overs. On that basis Leinster were deemed to have won by three wickets.

Although the Open Records do not go back earlier than 2011, we have details of successful run chases for ‘senior’ [Division 1 / Division 2 and Leinster Senior Cup] cricket going back to 1919. The highest chase and the most impressive in terms of wickets lost was by YMCA is a Senior Cup [60 Overs] match against Phoenix in the Phoenix Park in 2015. Thanks to centuries from Simi Singh [125*] and Jack Tector [107] YMCA won by eight wickets with 11 balls to spare.

The highest second innings score that was unsuccessful according the senior records occurred in a timeless semi-final cup match between Railway Union and Merrion at Park Avenue in 1961. Merrion scored 378 in the second innings but still fell far short of Railway’s massive total of 485/7. This is accounted the highest match aggregate in the history of open competitions - 863 runs.

If anyone can recall the details of other matches open competition matches before 2011 when the team batting second scored over 300 to win please let me know and we will see if we can track down and add to the records. Contact cricketleinster@gmail.com

Anyone who wants to check out the ‘best chases’ records for their own club should contact admin@cricketleinster.ie and access to reports can be provided.
