Standings in the 2020 League Structure Calculations

Saturday August 3rd saw the last round of the LHW Financial Planning League stage. The results for the day have been reported on elsewhere on the site but we can now be a little clearer as to the impact on the 2020 League Structure Points Calculation.

The following table indicates the points position of the teams at the end of the IBI Corporate Finance Senior League Cup Final:

  Total
Merrion 1 987.5
Clontarf 1 737.5
North County 1 687.5
Pembroke 1 837.5
YMCA 1 687.5
The Hills 1 800.0
Leinster 1 637.5
Malahide 1 587.5
Phoenix 1 625
Rush 1 437.5
Railway Union 1 237.5
Balbriggan 1 287.5
Cork County 1 237.5
Terenure 1 87.5

This table shows the final League placings:

    League Points Total
1 Merrion 1 140
2 Pembroke 1 125
3 The Hills 1 116
4 Malahide 1 100
5 YMCA 1 83
6 Phoenix 1 83
7 Leinster 1 38
8 Rush 1 10

The competition now moves forward in two directions. The top four teams move into the playoff stage, which will ultimately decide the Premier League Champion for 2019. 2020 League Structure Points for those four teams are allocated after that playoff stage, in order to ensure that the team that wins the title receives the most points.

The teams in the bottom four places will play in a Plate competition, but this is a separate competition and will not determine 2020 League Structure points.

Those points are allocated as follows:

Position Points Awarded
GF Winner 350
GF Runner Up 325
Loser of Playoff 3 300
Loser of Playoff 2 275
5th 250
6th 225
7th 200
8th 175

Therefore we know that points can be allocated as follows:

Position Team Points Awarded
Playoff
Phase
Merrion 1, Pembroke 1, The Hills 1,
Malahide 1
At least 275
5th YMCA 1 250
6th Phoenix 1 225
7th Leinster 1 200
8th Rush 1 175

Bearing in mind that it is too early to allocate any Championship points, this means that the 2020 League Structure Points looks as follows:

Rank Total Notes
1 Merrion 1 1262.5Final tally dependent on position in
Playoff Phase
2 Pembroke 1 1112.5Final tally dependent on position in
Playoff Phase
3 The Hills 1 1075Final tally dependent on position in
Playoff Phase
4 YMCA 1 937.5Final Tally
5 Malahide 1 862.5Final tally dependent on position in Playoff Phase
6 Phoenix 1 850Final Tally
7 Leinster 1 837.5Final Tally
8 Clontarf 1 737.5Pending Championship Points
9 North
County 1
687.5Pending Championship Points
10 Rush 1 612.5Final Tally
11 Balbriggan 1 287.5Pending Championship Points
12 Railway
Union 1
237.5Pending Championship Points
12 Cork
County 1
237.5Pending Championship Points
14 Terenure 1 87.5Pending Championship Points

So we know the following for sure:

  • Rush will be in the Championship in 2020
  • Merrion 1, Pembroke 1, The Hills 1, YMCA 1 are all guaranteed in the Premier League in 2020
  • Terenure, Cork County, Railway Union & Balbriggan will all be in the Championship in 2020
  • If Clontarf finish in the top two of the Championship they will play in the Premier League in 2020, which would see Leinster drop out of the top eight places
  • If North County win the Championship they will play in the Premier League in 2020
  • If North County finish second in the championship they will be on the same points level as Leinster, and their positions will be decided by the total number of points gained using this system in 2019 competitions. This would see Leinster have a higher points value and therefore be higher ranked and play in the Premier League in 2020.

With four matches to play in the Championship there is a lot of opportunity for clubs to make up ground or consolidate their position. As that competition continues, and the Premier League Playoff Phase progresses, we will update the relative positions of each team as we reach the end of the season.
