Despite the terrible weather the first finals day of the season has arrived with four teams ready to contest two 20/20 competitions.
The Whelan Cup sees Malahide 4 pitted against Leinster 5. Malahide have marginally the easier progress through to the final with victories over Clontarf 4, Phoenix 4 and Balbriggan 2. Leinster had a close call in the SF only beating Sandyford 2 by nine runs. This followed wins against Merrion 6 and Wicklow 2. INterestingly both teams have batted first in every round of competition to date.
The Whelan Cup was first competed for in 1972. Leisnter have won the competitin three times, in 1976, 1980 and 1997 but only the last time with their 5th XI. Malahide have won the competition once before in 1995.
The second final is between Ring Commons and Railway Union 4. Ring Commons have yet to lose a match this season and currently lead D13 with a massive 94.67%. But it is Ralway Union 4 who must be favourites being in third palce with only one loss in D11. This is the first time this competition will be run thanks to the sponsorship of the Russell Court Hotel.
