Report on Girls Schools Cricket 2015

This year the six competitions for schoolgirls saw a good spread of schools on the podiums for winners and runners-up with Mounty Anville being the most successful single school.

St Andrew’s College won the Senior I competition for a third season. Alexandra College contested the Senior II final for the second year in a row, however Mount Anville School took the trophy. Mount Anville School were in four of the six finals this season, winning the Senior II, Junior II and 1st Year B. In the Junior I final Wesley College retained their trophy by beating new entrants St Joseph’s Rush. The High School won the 1st Year A final.

In terms of the level of participation, 2015 saw a reversal in the slight dip in the number of teams and schools taking part from the highpoint in 2012. There were a numebr of new schools involved - St Joseph’s (Rush), Dundalk Grammar School, Sandford Park School and Temple Carrig School - and Wilson Hospital School rejoined the competition. Rathdown School lost their cricket facilities to building works for the summer term so had to withdraw their teams, but hopefully will be back next year.

East Glendalough School and St Vincent’s Dundalk were available for friendlies and a number of other schools are looking to enter the competitions next season.

The one sad note of the year was the death on 15th April of Ruth Henderson. She was coach of Wesley and for many years was at the forefront in promoting girls schools cricket in Leinster. She will be hugely missed.

Huge thanks and congratulations to all involved in organising, coaching, umpiring and supporting the schoolgirls’ cricket.
