This second article on the detailed breakdown of performances of youth players in Open Competitions focuses on the bowlers. Of the 462 youth players who took part in OC matches in 2014 [Leagues, Cups or T20] 368 were given a chance to bowl and 305 took at least one wicket.
Looking at the overall impact of young bowlers on the competitions, in all they took over 3000 wickets, representing nearly 23% of the total taken. Almost exactly proportional to their level of participation in the league. Indeed the bowlers do better than the batsmen who score less than 20% of the runs.
The thresholds for qualification for the bowling averages rise with the age group involved from 10 wickets for U13 to 25 wickets for U19. The column League refers to the OC League[s] where most wickets taken.
U13 Age Group
Qualification 10 Wickets: There were atotal of 38 U13 bowlers of whom 31 took at least one wicket. Gavin Hoey [Pembroke] had the distinction of heading the overall youth bowling averages and was the only bowler with an average less than 10. Equally impresssive Cian Nulty's [Balbriggan] 48 wickets put himin the top three wicket takers across all ages
