Open Competitions: Youth Batting Averages

Detailed breakdowns of the performance of youth cricketers in Open Competitions have been compiled. It is hoped that these will not only be worthwhile in acknowledging success on the field but also provide a help when it comes to picking training squads and teams. As always they only provide a partial picture of the contribution of a player to a team or a match.

In this case of the figures set out below there is a further caveat – they range across the full spectrum of leagues, cup and T20 competitions and at all level from D1 to D14. No weighting is given here to what type or standard of match is included in the figures.  A further breakdown by League Division will follow. An indication of the main Divisions[s] that a player competed in is given in the final column. The thresholds for qualification for the overall batting averages increase with the age group concerned from 200 runs for U13 to 400 runs for U19.

U13 Age Group          A total of 47 players took part in 320 matches. The outstanding performance with the bat was from Neil Rock from Rush who scored over 400 runs, including four 50s, and averaged 33.5. In all five players scored over 200 runs.

U15 Age Group          A total of 134 players took part in 1552 matches. There were a number of stand-out performances headed up by Andrew Vincent [Clontarf] with five players scoring more than 500 runs. There were also 5 centuries scored and 48 fifties.

U17 Age Group          A total of 152 players took part in 2008 matches. This proved to be a very strong age group with some of the highest averages and aggregate totals. Brian Smyth [N County] and Gareth Delany [Leinster] averaged 47 and came second and third in the overall batting averages for youth players. There were 11 hundreds and 78 fifties

U19 Age Group          A total of 120 players took part in 1501 matches. There were 6 hundreds and 56 fifties. Daire O'Neill [N Kildare] topped the overall batting averages and Mark Collier [Clontarf] scored the most runs.

The overall batting averages for all competitions [using the thresholds for the different age groups] is headed by Daire O’Neill [N Kildare] who was the only player to average more than 50 runs per match in the season. The youngest player in the overall averages was Neial Rock [Rush]
