This evening saw Merrion’s U17 Boys become the latest side to secure their place in the upcoming All-Ireland competitions, as they were comprehensive winners of the Gresham House U17 Cup against Railway Union in Park Avenue.

Railway won the toss and elected to bat first, on a fresh wicket. However, a sublime effort with the ball from the visitors saw them decimating ‘the Patch’s’ middle order, as both Seb Dijkstra and Alex Casey claimed 3/16 from their respective four over spells.

William Cleere’s 2/7 saw Railway all out for just 61, bundled out in 15 overs as the Anglesea Road outfit took every opportunity which fell their way throughout the innings, only Gethin Kelleher’s 27 from 36 balls able to show a level of resistance throughout.
The chase wasn’t straightforward, as conditions were tough, however after weathering the opening spells of Kelleher and Toby Slye-O’Connell, Merrion’s opening pair of Dijkstra and gloveman Ollie Mollins opened their shoulders.

It was Dijkstra who was dominant throughout however, and he ultimately finished unbeaten on 42 to see his side to victory with 9 overs to spare, without losing a wicket as Mollins (15*) accompanied him to the end.

Merrion now progress to the All-Ireland competition, and a massive congratulations must go to all players and officials associated with the side on this brilliant achievement.

Cricket Leinster would once again like to thank Gresham House for their support of youth cricket in Leinster this season, it is greatly appreciated.
