Lightning players dominate latest Div 1 averages

Two weeks have passed since the last round up of the Division 1 averages, a fortnight in which ten Division 1 matches have been played. YMCA, Cork County, Pembroke and North County have all played three games in that period, with the other four teams playing once. Clontarf and Pembroke have been unbeaten in that period, with Railway Union and Malahide failing to win a game.

A full summary of this weekend's matches can be found at http://www.cricketleinster.ie/news/weekend-roundup-and-the-irish-cup-sfs. Here we concentrate on how those matches have affected the Division 1 averages, and the race for the various individual trophies.

Highest Batting average in Division 1 - Marchant Cup (current qualification - 400 runs)

In the last fortnight, only four players managed to score over 100 runs, and three of those feature in the race for the Marchant Cup, with the qualification mark now being 400 runs *the exception being Pembroke's Jono Cook, who has now scored 362 runs at 30.17.

Stephan Grobler scored a crucial 86* as Cork County beat Malahide, and his form is going to be crucial if Cork County stay above the relegation zone. The other two players, Tom Fisher and Jack Tector added 237 runs for the first wicket as YMCA beat Railway Union on August 8th, Fisher is the highest scorer in these averages with 635 runs (at 48.85).

At the top though, there is no change. Merrion's David Rhoda remains second. His golden duck in the Irish Senior Cup isn't included in these averages, so he stays with the healthy average of 131.75. Clontarf (and now Leinster Lightning) player Adrian d'Arcy stays in top place. He added another not out innings at the weekend, scoring 35* as Malahide were defeated by 8 wickets.

Lowest Bowling average in Division 1 - O'Grady Cup (Current Qualification - 16 wkts)

WIth Alex Cusack drawing his illustrious Ireland career to a close this week, he may be able to focus his not inconsiderable bowling skills on catching Eddie Richardson in the race for the O'Grady Cup. Richardson added another six wickets since our last summary, whilst Cusack took three, albeit at an average of 6.33.

Michael  Granger of Clontarf remains the highest wicket taker, with 35, but as he is not qualified for Ireland, is not eligible to win the trophy. Two players have taken seven wickets int he past fortnight, Simmi Singh of YM (at an average of 16) and Cork County's Ahmed Bilal Bhatti, who took 4-20 against Pembroke.

Leading allrounder in Division 1 - Samuels Cup (Qualification 200 runs and 8 wickets/dismissals)

With a lot of cricket still to be played, the Samuels Cup is wide open. Even then it is difficult to see the trophy going to anyone outside the quartet of Simmi Singh, Lorcan Tucker, Albert van der Merwe and Eddie Richardson.
