  3. Lewis races ahead in Div 3 batting race
18th June 2015 by Paul Reynolds

Lewis races ahead in Div 3 batting race

There were seven matches this week, with three Division 3 matches, and the four Senior 2 Cup quarter finals. Wins for YMCA 2, Merrion 2, Laois 1 and Greystones 1 in the latter, as well as for Merrion 2 (again), Laois 1 (again) and North Kildare 1 in the league, means lots of opportunities for those in the hunt for the individual awards in Division 3.

The league table itself continues to be the most unpredictable of all sixteen Open Comps leagues. Merrion 2 have opened a small gap at the top, but even The Hills 2 in 8th could be challenging again with a couple of wins.

Qualification criteria for the averages remain generous, giving lots of players the opportunity to see their name in lights.

Highest Batting average in Division 3 - (current qualification - 150 runs)

Qualification moves to 150 runs, meaning we have a new leader. Michael Lewis (Merrion) has found Division 3 bowling to his liking since arriving from Souith Africa, and has so far plundered 356 runs, making him the leading run scorer in all competitions this season. He is being chased by Tomas Rooney Murphy (The Hills), with an excellent average of 70.33, as well as Tom Satchwell of North Kildare.

Lowest Bowling average in Division 3 - (Current Qualification - 8 wkts)

Pembroke 2 captain, Bill Whaley had a relatively unproductive double weekend, so two Clontarf bowlers have moved up - although neither played in Clontarf's loss to Merrion 2 during the week. Armand Smit's 4-37 for Laois against Pembroke in the Senior 2 Cup sees him reach the qualification criteria for the first time.

Leading allrounder in Division 3- (Qualification 300 points - 1 pt for each run, 20 pts for each wkt, ctch or stmp)

The barrier has gone up to 300 points, with eight players managing to jump over it. A very impressive octet they make, with Paul Ryan, Mark Collier, Bill Whaley and Richard Forrest all haveing extensive Division 1 and 2 experience. Mark Donegan is sure to have lots of 1st team cricket ahead of hm, Manjeet Singh could be helping to propel North Kildare to higher levels, and Lewis and Smith (who make up a quarter of the line up of the infamous 100m final in the Seoul Olympics) are used to playing at a decent level as well.
