In between some heavy showers, Phoenix emerged with their first ever Senior Women's Cup from a pulsating Final at Sydney Parade last evening.
Phoenix won the toss and batted first in an innings which was dominated by Irish International and former YMer, Gaby Lewis who plundered her way to an unbeaten 93 off just 49 balls in a team total of 148 for the loss of just one wicket. Lewis dominated an unbeaten 77 run partnership with Alice Tector to set The Hills an imposing target of 149 in a game reduced to 16 overs after some persistent rain interrupted the Phoenix innings.
Under grey skies and with the ongoing threat of rain, the young side from The Hills made an excellent effort in the chase with strong contributions from a number of players including Irish International Jane Maguire (55 off 40) and opener Tahlia Dunne with a determined 31.
In the end, a tight penultimate over from Tector piled on the pressure and Zara Craig then bowled a final over which conceded just 2 runs and brought about the wickets of Maguire (clean bowled), Rebecca Gough (to a spectacular boundary catch from Sophie McDonough) and finally the run out of Clíodhna O’Reardon as The Hills came up short but only by 16 runs.
Siobhan McBennett (CL President) praised both teams in the after-match ceremony whilst Becca Gallagher (Chair of Women's Cricket) presented Gaby Lewis with the well deserved Player of the Match award.
A great Final played in great spirits - and a new name on the trophy - Phoenix CC (Champions for 2024).
