Opening Fixture
The Leinster Blue and Leinster Navy squads played their opening fixtures against each other in the U15 Girls’ Interprovincial Series today in Oak Hill CC. Over the coming weeks we will see our two squads play off against Northern Cricket Union (NCU) and North West Cricket Union (NWCU) in both T20 and 35-over formats. The series is a tight schedule of competitive cricket played in multiple locations, for which you can see the full schedule at the end of this article.
Today’s T20 kick started the series with Leinster Navy winning the toss and electing to bat first. Top scoring for the Navy’s were Sarah Prendergast with 37* off 47 balls and Juliet Gargan with 21. The pair made a fantastic partnership of 91 runs which set the team up well; setting a healthy target of 123 with the loss of just 3 wickets. Vanessa Scollard topped the bowling stats with 17 runs given off her 4 overs with Laura Bolton also bowling tidily with figures of 3-0-17-1.
Leinster Blue started out with a good run rate, but the wickets were not holding. There were three main partnerships: Oliver and O’Toole (25); Scollard and Martin (25) and Martin and Bolton (22) that brought them close, but the bowling line up proved challenging for Leinster Blue. Hannah Lee and Annabel Walsh played a stormer with the ball, both taking 2 wickets a piece. Notably Wash bowling opener Ursula Oliver out, who was in her element scoring 20 off just 19 runs. Lee only went for 7 off her 3 overs and Walsh also very economical with figures of 3-0-11-2. Leinster Blue finished on 102 for 7 in the end giving Navy the victory by 21 runs.
