  3. Leinster Senior Career Batting 1919 - 2014
20th June 2015 by Eddie Lewis

Leinster Senior Career Batting 1919 - 2014

Sixty five players qualify for the Leinster Senior batting Averages on the basis of scoring more than 5,000 runs at an average of at least 22*. Although the bulk of the players learnt their cricket in Leinster, it is notable that of the top ten in the averages, only two are home grown. Three players, Bray, Masood and Botha have career averages of over 50.

In terms of the total number of runs scored O’Brien is well out in front with over 21,000. No one else has even reached 15,000 and there are another twelve over 10,000.

Most matches played is also by O’Brien [703] over the longest career span of 43 years. Five other players exceed 500 matches – Pigot, McDermott, Hope, Buttimer and Lewis [Alan].

Botha [25], Bray [24] and Masood [23] lead the centuries table.

The breakdown in terms of the number of players in the different period shows that there has been a steady increase in the numbers qualifying for the averages in more modern times. In the total pre-II World War a period there were only nine players who reached 5,000 runs. In the last two decades of the centruy the number was 25.

Twenty nine players competed for only one club through their entire career. YMCA, Leinster and Clontarf have the most players in the list at 14 each - with Phoenix next at 12.
