Girls u19s beat Dorset

Cricket Leinster U19 Girls defeated Dorset in Malvern today by 6 wickets in a low scoring game on the main pitch in the college grounds. Leinster Captain Clodagh Conway won the toss and asked the West Country Minor County team to bat first. The start of the game was delayed by an hour due to a torrential and unexpected downpour, no overs were lost however and the game remained a 50 over match. The Leinster bowlers made steady progress through the opposition line up, with playing and missing the order of the day as the Dorset batters struggled to cope with the away swing of Clodagh Conway (2-14) and Rhiannon Pope (0-8). Rebecca Branagan, with her unerringly accurate flighty slow mediums returned the second best figures of the innings with 3-22. Best was Hannah Grieve who, despite being a little wayward at times, "burgled" herself 3-17 from her 4.4 overs. Dorset's innings closed in the 49th over on 101 all out. The Leinster chase ended up being a much longer affair than originally planned, due in most part to the ultra slow spin bowling of the Dorset attack. 5 of their 6 bowlers used served up flighted and looped off breaks that offered the Leinster batters little or no pace to work with. An opening stand of 31 runs from Raymond-Hoey (22) and Branagan (11) got Leinster off to a steady start as it became clear the chase would not be a quick 5 an over affair. Grieve (9) and both Conway sisters, Clodagh (11) and Niamh (9) came and went between the 13th and 31st over as the pitch and bowling got slower. The game was eventually finished in the 35th over by Hannah Ridgeway (5*) who having become tired of prodding at it suddenly used her feet to nail one over mid wicket. There also at the end was Alison Smith, her 25 not out from 35 balls along with her 1-14 from her 10 overs earned her the MOM title. Today (Tuesday) sees Leinster play Buckinghamshire, who having tied with Durham, progressed to the first Semi Final on count back. The other Semi sees Durham as round 1 best loser play Somerset. Scores: Dorset 101 all out (E Broad 24, M Barraclough 12). Grieve 3-17, Branagan 2-22, Conway 1-14, Smith 1-14) Leinster 102-5 (U Raymond-Hoey 22, A Smith 25*). E Broad 2-16
