  3. Full steam ahead for Fingal Teacher Training
9th October 2015 by Reinhardt Strydom (Fingal CDO)

Full steam ahead for Fingal Teacher Training

Fingal County Council Sports Office and Cricket Leinster have been working with many primary schools assisting teachers to develop their skills by delivering an ‘Introduction to Cricket’ teacher education programme.

The ‘Introduction to Cricket’ programme has been delivered to over 40 schools throughout Fingal. Whilst to date, the primary focus has been working with pupils we have always requested that the teachers help out with the school coaching visits in order to learn more about the game.

Linked to this are the new teacher training workshops.  These workshops are delivered to school staff (usually on staff in-service/training days or directly after school). The workshops are very practical and interactive and includes the many basics of cricket, skill activities and game-based activities for teachers’ PE class plans.

So far this year there have been eight schools that have participated in the workshops with over 150 teachers attending. Two further schools this year have confirmed and hopefully we will continue to get more schools involved in this education programme.

Fingal has many schools currently participating in Cricket Leinster activities – Leprechaun Cup, Super league, Leprechaun Cup ‘Cailini’, Fingal Girls Super League & also many 4th & 5th class Kwik cricket blitz’ held each May. It is hoped these workshops will further educate teaching staff in Fingal and in-turn increase playing numbers around the county’s Primary schools.
