  3. Finals Day in Claremont Road - Sunday 21st July
21st July 2019 by Peter Boyd

Finals Day in Claremont Road - Sunday 21st July

Sunday afternoon and evening promises two fantastic matches as the Finals of two prestigious Cricket Leinster competitions are played out in Claremont Road, the home of YMCA Cricket Club.

First up at 2pm, the final of the YM Salver takes place with Balbriggan’s second side taking on one of the success stories of recent years in Leinster, Carlow Cricket Club. Balbriggan 2nds are no strangers to this Final having won the trophy for the first time and at the first attempt in 2017.

Some years after the introduction of the YM Salver competition, following the passing of Alex Dunlop, longstanding YM member and former President of both the Leinster and Irish Cricket Unions, the YMCA club decided to dedicate the trophy to his memory and it is normally presented at the final by a member of the Dunlop family – we are delighted that Amanda Dunlop is fulfilling this role this year.

The trophy is a distinctive one - a silver salver rather than the common cup. It has of course been noted on celebratory occasions since, that it holds twelve pints – full glasses that is.

On conclusion of this first T20 Final of the day, the second follows at 5pm which is the Tillain Cup Final. This cup for Senior 2 sides, sees Clontarf face Phoenix.

In the thirty-two years of the competition to date, it has been won by thirteen clubs. Clontarf (who are this year’s Final) lead the way with six wins closely followed by Merrion with five. Railway Union, with Eddie Tillain on the team were the first winners in 1987 but had to wait until 2006 for their second and so far only other success. We are also delighted that Eddie Tillain will be on hand to present the trophy which he donated all those years ago.

There will also be presentations to the Player of the Match for both matches.

Throughout both matches there will be tweets on both @cricketleinster and from reporter Peter Boyd (@fibrofella), with full match reports and images to follow onwww.cricketleinster.ie after the presentation ceremonies.
