Fantasy updated (and formatted) 6 June

First up, my apologies for the posting and removal of this article yesterday. More haste, less speed. I hope that it appears in a more reader-friendly manner today.

The weekend brought, finally, some weather that suits the game we have chosen to play and follow. Added to that the extra day on Monday, some souls had the chance to play three games in three days. It seemed like a good idea at selection, but by the time Monday came around there were some sore bodies and sore heads, but for the fortunate few there were runs, wickets, catches and fantasy points to amass.

You can discover your own breakdown of your points or your Club’s point scorers by contacting the author at craig@cricket.ie or by twitter @craigpcc.

Last week’s leader Jeremy Dunleavy [Pembroke] remains top of the 1,717 names on our list, having played in every game open to him over the weekend. His 138 points this week enabled him to keep A. Yadav [Adamstown] at bay by just 25 points.

A. Yadav’s return to the playing fields yielded an impressive 182 points and saw him climb three places from 5th to 2nd. Whilst P. Collins’ [R&SPU] Man-of-the-Match performance and 135 points on Monday versus Pembroke in a Division One clash sees him take third.

As the growth of cricket in Ireland continues apace we had a further 113 players make their first appearance including the nine of Allied Irish Banks C.C... Staff cutbacks must have taken their toll, even on the cricket team.

Over 254,000 points have been scored this season, fifty seven thousand of those in the past week. 334 players (out of 1,717) have played just once and it is hoped that they will once more grace the playing fields of Leinster.

The total of 1,717 players is, enough to fill 156 teams, with one left over to cover the 12th man duties for all 78 matches. Whoever that person is would be very busy, plus we would have to find 78 pitches to play on, 156 umpires, 78 scorers and most importantly, someone to butter 284 sliced pans and bake 215 cakes.

Without further ado there follow a number of statistical tables. They do not measure actual talent or ability, nor do they pretend to provide guidance to future starring lists, or possible selection to representative teams. Players can not be measured across the leagues. There are players who play more games, gain more places over players who may have great figures, but over fewer games. P. O’Boyle [Adamstown] slipped a further 76 places this week, having not played, even though he has a batting average of 41.40. Z. Sandhu [Slieve Bloom] has a points per game average (only topped by P. Collins with 152.8) of 147 but as he has played but one game he resides in 676th place on our table. Ronan Kane [Dublin University] had the best weekend with 274 points which saw him jump 482 places, whilst his colleague, S. Banjeree [Dublin University] jumped 968 places.

There is a reason it is called a fantasy table. So do not take it too seriously, apply a pinch of salt and continue to enjoy partaking of this wonderful game. Games where you get tea, drinks and stop at the slightest drop of rain. As the Urban Dictionary would have it, “cricket is a game of skill and gentlemanly conduct where everyone hates the Australians equally”.

The top ten (and ties) in the various categories after the weekend are as follows. The numbers after a name represents their position on the overall table – except on the overall table.

And to finish up this weeks round up two things. One, next weeks listing is likely to be a simpler overall points and breakdown for the top 200, or however many it needs to be to include the author and / or P. O’Boyle [Adamstown] and two, here are a few less known statistics that can be gleaned from all that our scorers and captains enter in their result cards each week.

  • Most innings without scoring a run….. R. Weir [Malahide] = 4, keep going, it will come.
  • Highest percentage of not outs to innings… Anto Burke [Sandyford], R, Evans [The Hills], Barry Tucker [Pembroke] = 100%: 3 innings, 3 not out, way to look after that non-existent average boys…
  • Most matches without batting… R. Walsh and Adnan Khan [both Dublin University], 7 matches.
  • Longest name in Leinster cricket… G Purappanathaanam [Swords]
  • P. Unregistered has now played for Leinster (twice), Sandyford and Lucan and has 46 runs, 3 wickets, 1 catch and 166 points.
