How appropriate it is that on the weekend that Pembroke host their Gathering event, that a Pembroke player heads the fantasy table. Jeremy Dunleavy is certainly enjoying his season having joined Pembroke this season after making the short trip from Merrion to Sydney Parade. 314 runs, 12 wickets and 4 catches in 8 games see him take a 31 point lead into the Bank Holiday weekend.
His club, Pembroke, have a full weekend planned with 8 games for the Men’s teams, plus their Gathering Event to which anyone who has played for or against Pembroke over the years is invited. Friday sees a Taverner’s game which could end up being the 20 of Sandymount versus the 25 of Ireland. Saturday has memories of the 1980’s as the “Country Boys” return for the evening’s entertainment and food as well as a busy bar (tickets available at the door) and Sunday has been designated memorabilia day with scorebooks, photos and memories abounding. All are welcome.
Enough of the advertisements and back to what is important, fantasy points and who is doing what.
This week’s top four points leaders scored 681 points between them in the past seven days. Last week’s leader A. Yadav [Adamstown] had the weekend off, scored no points and remains on 625 points and is now in 5th place. In fourth place is P. Collins [R&SPU], our points per game leader (157.25) with 629 points from just four games. 262 points in the past week saw him move up a full 15 places in the table. He is just one point behind third placed I. Smillie [Clontarf] who is joint leader of appearances with 11. His 166 points this week meant he jumped four places onto the podium. Second place is the other appearance leader with 11, M. Jacob [Swords] whose 120 points sees him move up one place.
Biggest mover in terms of position this week is FJ O’Halloran [Dublin University], now 335th overall, who moved an amazing 1,032 places on the table. His dramatic rise is explained by his scoring 184 points in addition to his previous points total of 11.
Biggest points scorer this week was V. Patel [Merrion] who had a week to remember, scoring 361 points with 131 runs and 8 wickets. His point’s tally of 552 sees him move 192 places up and take 10th place overall.
A. Poynter [Clontarf], 109th overall, has the highest batting average of the season so far with his three innings and two not outs amounting to an average of 165.00. One run is all that separates him from Danny Barclay [Pembroke], 159th overall, whose 164 runs from two innings, includes 150* last week. Also averaging over 100 are the following players: Matt Sorenson [The Hills] 233rd overall, 148.00; K. Merchant [YMCA], 51st, 132.00; C. Kenny [R&SPU], 322nd, 130.00; M. Collier [Clontarf], 174th, 126.00; E. Richardson [North County], 52nd, 114.50; D. Calder [The Hills], 482nd 112.00; and Aiden Chester [Phoenix], 114th, 110.00. Of these players only E. Richardson has been dismissed more than once and as is the way with statistics it would only take a Bradmanesque final dismissal to remove these players from this list.
In terms of total runs scored, C. McLoughlin [The Hills] 11th overall, tops the list with 359 runs, including a highest score of 145*, and a further 3 half centuries. Others to score over 300 runs in May are: P. Byrne [R&SPU], 8th, 357 runs (3 half centuries); Jeremy Dunleavy [Pembroke], 1st, 314 runs (highest score 103*); Richard Forrest [Dublin University], 25th, 310 runs (as one of only two players to score two centuries and a highest score of 148*); J. Tasmin-Jones [Dublin University] 9th overall, 303 runs; and H. Pike [Dublin University] 300 runs (with the highest individual score in Leinster cricket to date of 168*). With three players scoring over 300 runs we must assume that College Park is THE place to do your batting this summer.
Moving from the willow to the leather, the busiest bowler in Leinster cricket is one of last years top fantasy performers, R. Nair [Dundrum], 23rd overall, who has registered 77.2 overs. 14 wickets is his return, but his 99 points this week actually saw him fall 6 places on the overall table. The only other bowler to bowl more than 60 overs is second placed player overall, M. Jacobs [Swords] with 63 overs and 14 wickets. In fact the top three players overall fill three of the top four in overs bowled.
No bowler has managed to take 5 wickets in an inning more than once, but 46 players have done so once ranging from 4th overall, P. Collins [R&SPU] to 558th overall, Anto Burke [Sandyford].
Top wicket takers, S. Rice [Greystones], 7th overall, and R. Gorvin [Dublin University], 22nd overall have 18 victims and are two ahead of young Diarmaid Tucker [Pembroke], 16th overall. 48 players in total have 10 wickets or more.
S. Munawar [Slieve Bloom], 943rd overall, has a bowling average of 1.33. Two overs, four runs and three wickets place him top of this list. T. Monahan [Wexford Wanderers], 1,179th overall, is still statistically ahead with his one ball bowled, one wicket, not actually having an average. If we ignore those players with one or two wickets, the impressive performers in this category would be H. Shivmangal [Knockharley], 268th overall, with seven wickets costing 2.29 and Achmet Carr [Pembroke], 64th overall, with 8 wickets costing 29 runs for an average of 3.62.
J. Grassi [North County], 72nd overall, leads the safe hands category with 10 catches, although as he also has a stumping one assumes he has gloves to aid the catches. It is impossible to differentiate between Wicket-keeping catches and outfield catches unless the player concerned has also taken stumpings, so you will have to excuse everyone being lumped in together. Another keeper, J. Kerrison [Leinster] has 7 catches and 2 stumpings, whilst the leading catchers without taking a stumping to give his position away are seven players with six catches. Some of these even the author recognises as possessors of the gloves: I. Smillie [Clontarf], 3rd; C. McLoughlin [The Hills], 11th; N. Vorster [North Kildare] 15th; D. Singh [R&SPU] 57th; Robert Forrest [Clontarf] 151st ; M. Hogan [Terenure Titans], 276th and; M. Baumgart [The Hills] 287th.
Four keepers have 3 stumpings and they are: P. Byrne [R&SPU], 8th; J. Santosh [Swords], 78th, who as well as 3 stumpings and 4 catches has 4 wickets bowling too; M. Cotter [Terenure Titans], 115th; and J. Cassidy [YMCA] 492nd overall.
111 players made their debut last week and the total number of players so far this season is now 1,593.
63,894 runs have been scored off the willow that is, not including extras. 239 half centuries and 39 centuries are in the book and 1,507 players have been to the middle to bat. Whilst A. Craig [Clontarf] 680th, has played five games without making it near the middle with bat in hand.
3,265 wickets have fallen to bowlers, and this figure does not include any run outs, obstructing the field or timed out.
1,182 catches held and 51 stumpings taken.
I expect us to pass 200,000 fantasy points this weekend, not individually but as a collection of weary weekend warriors over a Bank Holiday weekend that will see many of us playing more than once.
As usual, if you would like to know your figures or the figures for your club or even if you would like to check my calculations and see the entire spreadsheet, you can contact me at craig@cricket.ie.
