  3. Batting Partnerships in Open Competitions
4th August 2014 by Eddie Lewis

Batting Partnerships in Open Competitions

Cricket we are often told is about partnerships. Bowlers work in pairs and if one releases the pressure then runs will inevitably leak from the other end as well. Similarly, if one bowler can build pressure then wickets often fall to his partner. But the benefit of bowlers acting in tandem, especially with the short spells now common in overs cricket, can be difficult to determine. Not so in batting where the outcomes are much more evident and the results are there for all to see.

One of the attractive features of the Fantasy tables produced by Craig Senior each week is that it brings all the leagues and cups of the Open Competitions together. It does not matter if you are playing in in Division 1 or Division 14, if you score runs or take wickets your efforts are recorded and brought together under one banner. I will follow the same approach here.

So far this season there have been eight double century partnerships. The highest is between two youth players Gareth Delany and Jack Kerrison of Leinster.  This is a particularly impressive as large partnerships require great concentration and stamina that is often, though evidently not in this case, lacking in younger players.
