  3. 2018 Russell Court Trophy preview - New format welcomes teams from across province

2018 Russell Court Trophy preview - New format welcomes teams from across province

The Open Competitions Committee has listened avidly to the recommendations made by the various focus groups last Autumn, and one of the main results has been the revamp of two of Cricket Leinster's T20 competitions.

Problems with previous formats have been three fold - that some players want to play more T20 cricket, that teams are finding it very hard to travel after work on weekday evenings, and that many clubs outside of Dublin have been excluded from playing in these competitions due to the travel involved.

As a result the OCC has divided the 27 teams into groups of three, with each team playing the others on June 2nd. The first match starts at 10.30, with the host team playing the team listed second. The two visiting teams then play at 2pm, before the hosts return at 5.30pm to play the other visitors. The best team on the day will advance to the quarter finals, with three of the group winners having another round robin day - the other six will enter a straight knock out round.

With so many matches being played, life is perhaps too short to preview them all, and so we have devised a new T20 ranking system looking at the results of all T20 matches since 2015. Twenty one of the teams are listed here, with six (Bagenalstown 3, Tyrrelstown 2, Ashbourne 2, Longford 3, Carlow 2 and AIB 2) all making their T20 debut this year. Points are allocated according to the result (win/lose/tie), and the level of the T20 competition.

Our cup previews on the site have already alluded to the possibilities for Greystones 2 this year. Dropping down the leagues at the request of the club, they none the less have a very decent pedigree, and unless there have been mass departures over the winter, they will be there and thereabouts. Terenure 3 are another team that has struggled at a higher level but who may be a force here.

Team Played Points Average
Greystones 2 8 285 35.625
Terenure 3 4 105 26.250
