The annual “Fun In The Sun” event run by Sports Active Wexford finished Saturday 12th August with almost 600 kids taking part. Sports in this Wexford programme included GAA, soccer, tag rugby, kickboxing and of course everyone's favourite - cricket. Although we didn't experience much sunshine, thankfully we managed to avoid any rain. Many thanks to Peter and Dermot who provided great assistance over the period and to Naomi who came down to Duncannon to experience the excitement of beach cricket for the first time.
In all 594 girls and boys aged from 6 to 12 years old participated at the seven venues throughout the County, namely Enniscorthy, Riverchapel, Duncannon, Rosslare Strand, Bunclody, New Ross and Wexford Town.
Our Wexford Cricket in the Community Development Officer, Herbert Honohan is looking forward already to next year's Fun In the Sun – “It was brilliant to see so many children enjoying cricket in a fun environment, many of whom had never tried the sport before. It was also a great opportunity to underpin the work we have been doing to bring cricket to schools throughout the county – we very much appreciate the opportunity to participate in this collaborative event organised by Wexford Sport Active and Wexford Local Sports Partnership.”
Cricket Leinster has been supporting youth cricket development in Wexford over the last number of years primarily through the work undertaken on our behalf by Herbie Honohan and his local team.
We have two very vibrant clubs in the county as follows:
