  3. TONGE TWINS POWER CUS TO SENIOR CUP
25th May 2022 by Mick Cotter

TONGE TWINS POWER CUS TO SENIOR CUP

Wickets for Mark Tonge followed up by an unbeaten half century from twin brother and captain Andrew led CUS to victory in this afternoon’s Boys Schools Senior Cup Final.

Having won the toss, Andrew Tonge invited Blackrock to bat first, and after a couple of early boundaries, Diarmuid Burke had the breakthrough, Jack Grant taking an excellent catch diving to his right to dismiss Philippe Le Roux. William Connellan followed off the bowling of Mark Tonge in the next over.

Tom Johnson and Macdara Cosgrave shared a partnership before a calamitous run out, followed by Cosgrave falling victim to Oliver Manks for 20 saw the Williamstown outfit reduced to 57/5.

Patrick Morris made 24 in shepharding the tail to 96 all out in the 31st over as Mark Tonge returned to finish with figures of 3/38, whilst Ethan Marshall finished with 2/3 and Oliver Manks 2/11 in an excellent all-round performance from CUS.

In reply, Andrew Tonge opened the innings with back to back boundaries, and by the time Morris had bowled the second the score had moved to 20 without loss.

A change of bowling made little difference to Tonge as he continued to cut, pull and drive the ball to all parts of the ground, losing just opening partner Jack Grant and number 3 Ethan Marshall on his way to an unbeaten half-century, which he brought up with a lofted on-drive in hitting the winning runs.
